A very good friend of mine was involved in one of these viral "true crime" cases a couple of years ago and it was absolutely shocking to me all the lies and misinformation spread on social media about him. It's like one person would make up a rumor and then absolutely everyone who read it would spread it like it was gospel. It was torture seeing all of this go down knowing that it was all misinformation and not being able to say anything.

All the podcasters and TikTokers and Facebook Justice Warriors were proven wrong, but by that time they just moved on to spreading bullshite about another case.

Bingo, especially if he couldn't swim

Really in the same way most white people are accused of racism…indirect, unspoken, and subtle.

As with all accidents there are multiple events / factors that led to unfortunate outcomes.

1. Not being able to swim (I don't know if this has been confirmed)
2. Alcohol
3. Murky water
4. Strong rip tide on the side of the island where he was found (this is from the Cajun Navy)
5. Loud noise levels - music and people. If was able to cry for help, would anyone have heard him?
6. Extreme heat
6. Lack of trained rescuers / observers. Most people would not recognize drowning if it happened in front of them. It's not like in the movies where someone screams for help. It's the opposite - head underwater and arms failing about.

I'd assume he was in the water and got caught in a rip. Given the time it took to find the body he was close to shore.

There were so many people on the island, you're not going to drag off a fit young man (I'll wager he could fight) in daylight and kill him without someone noticing. Unless you think everyone on the island was in on his death.

Black commenters have been saying don't let your Black children go out with White people because they end up dead... Your Black children are statically safer with White people than they are with Black people...

Others are saying that this foursome was actually part of a larger friend group of eleven that were all travelling together in separate boats, lending some clarity on why Nolan felt comfortable staying back and why the others allowed him to do that.

This is what I have thought happened especially with the kids being from the area. I would think a lot have boats in the family that could make it out there especially if conditions are good. Some might take a chance in boats that they should not use for that trip. I am sure it wasn’t the first time that they all went out there or the first time that boats left with different or less people on board than it’s trip out to the island.

If the guys in the one boat went by themselves to fish or whatever (not with a group of other boats or for a party with other friends) or were a group of out of towners going out there for the first time I would understand the questioning of leaving without someone and leaning towards them knowing something or covering up something. To do that with these locals and basically for some the only evidence required to blame them was the kid was black with a group of white boys is just pathetic.

How do you all go somewhere together, but then y'all have non-issue leaving someone behind, without having 100% certainty that said person will have a ride back. Not to mention, the young man's phone was allegedly left on the boat. So he wouldn't have even had a way of contacting anyone. You just don't do that.

Happened to me, except it was before cell phones were common. I'm glad my friends said okay when I told them to go on, I'd find a way home. Been married to the cute girl who brought me home for a while now.

I'm sorry this young man drown. It's tragic for him and his family and friends. I just don't default to seeing this as anything other than a tragedy of youth where alcohol and undeveloped brains lead to tragedy, especially in what appears to be a benign environment, but isn't. Water is dangerous.

Actually talking to my daughter about this who was on Horn Island that day and many other days. Kids and adults do generally leave on the same boat unless there was a reason. Sounds like there was a reason (boat having mechanical issues). Tough situation. I hate all the race talk. I deep down believe that had nothing to do with it. Absolutely Nothing

but the word on the street is that they were all plastered

When I was at Tech we were in the WAC at the time so we played every other year @ Hawaii. We would arrive there on a Monday and not play until Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. We would have practice in the mornings, but had the rest of the day and evening to do whatever we wanted for the most part. We would travel to different beaches and other places to party. Needless to say, there were always some alcohol-induced not-so-smart choices made. Some dudes would stay behind and party with people we had met while others went to either another place or back to the hotel. Looking back, it’s amazing nothing bad ever happened. Was it irresponsible? Yes. Was it smart? No. Were we bad friends for leaving someone behind who wanted to? Perhaps maybe. At the time we were young, drunk, and thinking with our dicks so it didn’t really pop into our minds. Hell, we had dudes scattered all over Oahu

All that to say, I’m sure these dudes wouldn’t have left their boy there if they thought anything bad was going to happen, much less him winding up dead. It was probably the last thing that crossed their minds, especially if he stayed on the island with other people he/they knew. Sure enough, the unthinkable happened. Just a really sad story.

After reading the back and forth here, I'll add this.

Many, many, many years ago, pre cell phones, I found myself in Richmond, Virginia for a buddy's wedding. I rode there from out of state with another friend of mine. After the wedding and reception we found ourselves downtown hanging out with the college rugby buddies of our mutual friend who had gotten married. Long tory short, the guy I came with, they guy with the car, and the guy who knew his way around town, found himself in hookup mode and "ditched" me. I told him go, I'd be OK.

So, there I was. In a strange city, where I knew about 2 people, and only a vague idea of where I was and where I was staying. Somehow, very early in the AM, I found myself back at my lodging, but with no way to get into the house where I was staying. So I made a command decision and just as I was crawling into the bed of my buddy's pickup to call it a night, my friend's "hookup" rolled up and dropped him off. As they say in baseball, "Safe at home." We went inside and called it a night. I wasn't even mad. It's kind of the guy code.

Point of the story is this. People make decisions like this every day. I'm sure many of us on here have similar stories. And yet, we never hear about them. Earlier in the night when my buddy told me what the deal was, at that point I was ok with it and knew that I was on my own. Fortunately, the rest of the decisions I made that night were good ones and things worked out. But at some point, people have to be responsible for their own actions.

I can see how what I said could be confusing. But I was saying that if I see my friend talking to a girl, I'm not just going to leave them and assume he'll figure it out. I will talk to them to confirm plans.

Now factor in a bunch of alcohol and recompute.
