Three employees at a sporting goods store in Louisiana were terminated from their jobs after attempting to stop a shoplifter who allegedly stole a pistol.

Michelle Sutton, along with two other unidentified workers at the Academy Sports + Outdoors in Metairie, Louisiana, said that the shoplifting incident happened Dec. 16.

Four days after the incident, Sutton said that the outdoor retail chain's firearm compliance personnel terminated her, as well as the two other employees for their response to the theft.

Sutton said that they were let go due to Academy Sports + Outdoors policy on loss prevention, which states that employees are not allowed to chase or physically restrain a fleeing person suspected of theft.

I guess too many residents started locking their guns up so NOLA's finest are resorting to retail theft for firearms.

I'd imagine the payday for getting shot by a stolen firearm that Academy corporate allowed to get stolen would be a pretty big high dollar lawsuit

This started well before the woke movement. I worked at Hibbett sports in high school circa 2005/2006 and this was a policy back then. Luckily we never had to test out that policy at the Safeshore (Covington) Hibbett Sports

I wonder how new this policy is. But either way, now that this has happened I hope they expect theft to directly increase.

Lol, no.

On the other hand, if one of those employees got killed going after the shoplifter, they would potentially be out of pocket quite a bit.

My question is how was someone able to shoplift a firearm.

So they aren’t allowed to do anything? Cause I need a few things from Academy.

Probably brought on by capitalist companies who don't want to pay for their employees getting hurt chasing criminals.

They can call the cops and give them footage and descriptions. Been that way for decades at big box stores.

Yup, literally nothing to do with liberals, wokeness, etc. This is a straight up dollars and cents employee liability issue.

I know they try to sue manufacturers not sure what’s going on with this but they want to sue the gun store.

You can sue for just about anything except dirty elections.

Winn Dixie did not have this policy in the 90’s.

Jr managers loved chasing down jr thugs who tried to shoplift a ribeye rack.

I know that some states have a "negligent storage" law. Idk how a business can let guns get stolen then have no repercussions if those guns are used in crimes

If all these dead-end retail stores don't appreciate workers who instinctively go after thieves, maybe the workers should consider enrolling in the police academy.
