McNeese State University has been chosen to be the site of the federal government’s new center for liquefied natural gas research.

Companies in Southwest Louisiana export one-third of all LNG in the world and this international demand for natural gas has led to the construction of three LNG facilities in Southwest Louisiana with eight more in the construction, development or proposal process.

The National Center of Excellence for Liquefied Natural Gas Safety will be a subsidiary part of the U.S. Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration. The center will merge with McNeese’s own LNG Center of Excellence under construction.

“The sheer volume of product supplied by the state of Louisiana is unparalleled and growing, and there is no better place to locate our Center of Excellence,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy in announcing the national project. That’s a sentiment echoed by the university’s president, Wade Rousse. “The idea of having a LNG Safety Center and Center of Excellence that will truly bring collaboration between federal regulators, industry and academia is a blessing to our location,” Rousse said. “This is truly a generational change. I believe 20-30 years from now, the seeds we’re planting today will be bearing a lot of shade, if you will, for those who follow us.”

Under construction since last May, McNeese’s initial vision for its Center of Excellence was to create a space for classrooms and industrial-grade training facilities where both students and LNG employees can learn while operating process equipment in a safe, controlled environment.  McNeese also started offering a certificate program in the business of liquefied natural gas.

Jim Rock, executive director of the Lake Area Industry Alliance, said this week’s announcement “demonstrates that Southwest Louisiana is the leader in all things associated with safe LNG exports.”

Rock said the center will further the expertise of the federal government in the operations, management and regulatory practices of LNG facilities; act as a repository of information on best practices for the operation of LNG facilities; and facilitate collaboration among LNG sector stakeholders.

“The mission is to make the United States of America the global leader in LNG safety and innovation,” he said. Rousse said the undergraduate certificate in LNG business — created nearly a year ago — caters to students who wish to increase their knowledge about the business side of the LNG industry.

The 18-credit hour certificate is a collaboration between the College of Business and the Department of Engineering and Computer Science

Good to see McNeese capitalizing on the industry boom in their backyard.

The Bucket Brigade, Tulane Environmental Law Clinic and Louisiana Budget Project will tell you because we allow these companies to "rape" our state and poison our people for nothing in return.

Louisiana is poor because a segment of our society chooses to live in total poverty.

LA is one of the few states in the country you can make six figures with a high school diploma if you’re willing to put in the work.

An utter travesty and injustice someone like that could make so much money while philosophy majors with PHDs are stuck having to make a high school teacher salary or try to pay off student loans working at Starbucks.

This is awesome. This is the kind of partnership between government, industry and education we need.

What more do we need to know more of…

You take natural gas and freeze it using electricity to super cool it into liquid. Then you load onto specialized tankers for transport.

Then it goes to its destination where it is warmed back up to a gas state and pumped into the gas transmission network. Only caveat is how to warm it. Some have suggested using seawater, but instantly chilling warm water and pumping it back into the ecosystem could be ripe for environmental issues. Also using seawater could corrode pipes leading to shorter lifespans on equipment, or you sacrifice some of the product to run gas boilers to heat up the liquid gas in a closed loop system.

Then you also have the Geopolitical side of LNG which is to sell at the right price for the right customers.

(I'm asking) I don't really know where the opportunities for the state are. Landowner gets paid, driller gets paid, pipeline gets paid, compressor gets paid, port gets paid. And I'm sure we are giving every incentive we can to keep as much of this out of Texas as we can.

Louisiana relationship to Texas is the China to Apple relationship. Cheniere, Phillips66, Exxon, Chevron, all of those companies are HQ'd in Texas. Louisiana just does the labor. The corporate profits go to those in Texas. It's same thing for China and Apple. The labor is done in China where they make cents per hour, but the real money is in the ownership in California. It's not quite that bad, but Louisiana doesn't get the office jobs for these plants. Or the upstream in NorthWest Louisiana either. Aethon, Southwestern, all Texas Upstream companies in Louisiana. Louisiana just gets the blue collar. The white collar and HQ for the blue collar roles stay far out of Louisiana. Only company I can think of that is major oil in LOuisiana white collar is Shell in Nola upstream.

They just need to put this at LSU in Shreveport. Shreveport is just vastly more important than any other city. Doesn't matter if 3 hours North of the LNG plants. Just such a culturally rich city that LNG needs to be on the Red River for smaller barge pickup. Closer to source with Haynesville anyway. 2x more expensive transportation, Barge instread of pipeline South to Lake Chuck, unload from barge to tanker in Nola on MS River. Most LNG gas prob comes from Haynesville anyways.

I <3 Shreveport
