I wonder if the farmer will get compensated for the untold amount of jet fuel they poured out all over his field and the surrounding areas.

If you think that sounds like a lot, or like a massive boondoggle, check out the dollar figures associated with the Zumwalt class DD’s or the Navy’s LCS program. At least the F35 has an operational primary armament and an identified role.

The Navy ships mentioned amount to a weirdly shaped hunk of stealthy scrap metal and a very large soda can with a helicopter pad, respectively

No idea of the weather/winds, but that certainly looks like pilot error.

Its a turbo prop, which is a jet engine with a reduction gearbox driving the propellers.

OK aviation greats on here.

Why would they use a turboprop to refuel a fighter jet?

Wouldn't stall speed of the fighter be to close to the speed of the turboprop?

Multiple reasons. 1st thats the platform the Marines use as air to air refueller. 2nd They don't have the budget to operate large tankers. 3rd A kc130 isn't exactly slow can cruise at 250 kts. Most usmc aircraft are carrier capable and have low stall speeds so matching pace with a kc-130 isn't a problem. Marines have to do more with less.

I’ve actually flown that specific bird many times. To answer your question, as mentioned, refueling speeds are 240-250 KIAS which are well above maneuver speeds for those jets. The KC-130J is organic to the Marine Corps which streamlines the tasking. Fun fact, the Marines have the second largest tanker fleet in the world minus the USAF of course.

So we use them because the Herc is the most versatile aircraft in the world. It refuels Helos and Ospreys too. Helos refuel around 115 KIAS. Not to mention that the Marines also do short field ops, parachute ops, amongst other things that a turbo prop can be more advantageous.

This actually sums it up minus the carrier capable reason. The KC130J can refuel pretty much anything with a probe because the herc only has baskets to connect to.

100 million less now, thanks to "The Great Santini" in the F-35....or what was an F-35.

That's why the real flying should be left to the pilots with "U.S.A.F." on the side of their jets.(and Hercs as well)
