How hard is it to find a spot these days?
Some retreats, especially those during nice weather, are usually full but you never know if you can get off a wait list. Retreats were limited to 50% capacity for quite a while, due to COVID, and it was hard to get in even as an attendee for many years.

my FIL and a couple coworkers do it every year. They keep going back so it must be ok. From what I’ve gathered it’s a silent retreat and is pretty tranquil. I’m sure a weekend away from the fam and your phone is probably a nice little retreat to clear your mind.

My dad has been going 20+ years, my brother and I have been going for almost 10. Awesome experience, I was hooked after my first one. Most weekends are full, but people always drop out at the last second. Get on the list for a weekend that works for you, and just be ready to get a phone call the day of. Once you get in, you pretty much have right of first refusal for that weekend each year, unless you miss.
To be honest, just the food is worth going for!
I am in group 31 (31st weekend of the year).

My dad goes every year with his best friend, who is a recovering alcoholic. My dad always says they have a good time.

Do you guys suggest just signing up for any random weekend that works for you personally?
I've asked friends to sign up but haven't had any takers.
Is going and not knowing anyone a good experience?

Dad goes every year. He's been asking me and my brother to go, but we never have yet.

I drove by there one day and immediately thought "what in the hell is this?" It is in the middle of nowhere.

My father’s an atheist, no joke, but has been going to Manresa for something like 30 yrs and absolutely loves it.. i think it’s just the peace and quiet and solitude that appeals to him, from what i can gather.. he’s been trying to get me to go for almost as long as he’s been going, but i just never really had much interest.. i do hear a lot of positives about it though .

Property was built as one of the first colleges in the state before the civil war.

My brother did it for years and always trying to get me to go. I could never commit due to kids, job. Cancer took my brother and now I regret not going.
Not sure of your relationship with your father but you may regret not going if you don't take the offer.

I thought the first rule of manresa was to not talk about manresa.

I have a cousin who is a well known pediatric oncologist. He goes every year to flush all that shite out of him (I don't see how anyone can do his job).
I have never been, but how structured is it? Are you left to your own devices mostly? Any knowledge of anyone adding psilocybin mushrooms or another psychedelic to their retreat?

A serious question for those who have been: Is it better than just going solo camping over the weekend with no electronics? How is the silence in a large group better than just being alone in the woods?

i went there for about 5 years
what a GREAT experience
and I am not catholic either
the hardest part was remaining silent when my room mate was one of my best friends
and WOW the food

I’ve been going to the Week 4 retreat for about 10 years - I’ll try and answer this one for you. I’m not catholic btw
It depends…
It’s gotten lost a bit in the discussion here, but, Manresa is a religious retreat based on the spiritual exercises of St. Ignatius of Loyola (founder of the Jesuits). Most of the guys that go are seeking the silence mentioned and time with the Lord. I wouldn’t compare it to a camping trip. You’ll eat like a king at Manresa and sleep in your own room.
If you get a chance to go, I highly recommend it!

It's a great place and retreats there are more than worth the time.
