Man calls United Airlines customer service, gets connected to someone else who takes $17k

Scammers getting more sophisticated.
TL;DR: Family flight gets canceled. Father calls United Airlines to get rebooked. Gets rebooked, and also gets scammed.
First thought was "obviously he called the wrong number" but that wasn't the case. Somehow he was put on hold and then connected to a scammer.
There were clear flags after the phone call, but I can see how you could overlook that considering the scammer actually did rebook his flight.

Smoker was set to take his wife, kids and their friends on an 18-day trip to Europe in late May. The family’s first flight got canceled after hours of delays due to mechanical problems.
quote:
The next morning, Smoker said, he was on the phone with United’s customer service line for more than three hours. He said he tried to work with an agent named David to rebook the trip on a partner airline.
quote:
Smoker said that David eventually rebooked the family on another United flight out of Newark and upgraded their seats to premium economy. The flight took off, and the vacation was saved.
But months later, Smoker was still waiting for that refund.

Scammers should be executed. Scammers that target the elderly should be tortured first.

Well now, that's terrifying.

859,000 scammer complaints were filed with the FBI last year.
There are 37,000 employees (not agents, employees) at the FBI. Maybe it’s time to dedicate some resources into cracking down instead of treating those scammer texts and emails as a fact of life.

I'd love a legal expert to weigh in. I feel like if this guy called United and they either hired a scammer or allowed their system to get hacked they should be responsible for this guy's losses

This is solvable if there was a will to solve it. Like most things.

If there was a profitable way to solve it for sure

What red flags were there?
And if they were able to actually rebook his flight, does that mean they were inside UA’s system? Because if so, it seems like they’d definitely be liable for restitution to the family.

They can find a twitter post or facebook post in seconds but they can’t stop spam calls and scammers it’s bull shite.

Actually talked to a financial crimes detective last week about my mom and he said FBI doesn't even want to deal with this. Nothing but deportation stuff for them right now.
I know that so much of this is out of the country but still they need to start taking this stuff seriously.

If a YouTuber can shut down a bunch of Indian scam call centers and get a bunch of dudes arrested why is the FBI not capable of doing this? LINK

Just block all phone calls that originate out of the United States. With AI, should be easy to see when people are spoofing numbers. Not sure who's getting paid, but the telecoms don't seem interested in stopping it. Need to turn a beekeeper loose on all those motherfrickers.

United is a trash airline, anyone who wants to fly on them has a well deserved world of hurt coming to them.

After the phone call: the email address and the credit card charge.

They are good. They have me questioning everything now. The numbers look legit and pop up as the business they are mimicking.

“David” or the first agent he called put him on hold and transferred him to the scammer. It’s an inside job and not tough to figure out.
