One of the last times I went to the MOL, when my wife and I returned to our car there were lots of young scholars hanging out next to ours with loud rap music blasting “I wanna F you….F you….F this Fing that….” The time before that there was some young white dude wearing a black trench coat, black COVID mask, dark glasses and black hat walking around and it freaked my wife out. I use to love malls when I was a kid but they are full of creepy people now. That isn’t just an indictment of MOL, it is basically all malls. Oh, I guess I missed the day the naked lady was running around MOL.

Leave Dicks , tear the rest down. Rebuild and flatten the stores out. Thugs aren’t standing in the heat

There appears to be a recurring pattern at Brookfield-managed properties.

The Mall in Columbia - has had multiple high-profile violent incidents over the years, including a 2024 fatal shooting and the well-known 2014 attack. Brookfield was identified as manager in recent coverage.

Westroads Mall Deadly 2021 shooting and prior security concerns. Brookfield was cited as parent company in local reporting.

Brass Mill Center 2025 shooting that injured five people; local officials publicly addressed safety concerns afterward.

Mayfair Mall High-profile 2020 shooting that injured eight people.

If the MoL wants to be considered a Class 'A' property, then Increased law enforcement presence and enhanced security measures would hopefully serve as a stronger deterrent. Unfortunately, BR cannot get away from the surrounding demographics, it will always be a challenge.

I was there about 10 days ago and from what I saw my family's not going back. Full of rachet mouth hyena type hood rats. Not going to Dick's any more.

The problem is they will still congregate wherever law abiding citizens are. Top golf, LSU tailgates, etc. The only thing that will work is to make them uncomfortable. Bring the national guard in. Watch every move they make. Loud music, a fricking light show in the undercarriage of their cars, driving like idiots, etc - pull them over. Take them feel as unwelcome as you possibly can. To hell with the optics. A lot of people criticize our current governor but he’s exactly the type of person you need to fix this problem.

We also need to start letting businesses know why we will not be returning. You can bet your arse L’auberge won’t let that mall shite happen on their property. Places like top golf, etc need to start adding more security and removing people who do not belong. I don’t have all the answers but amputation will not stop the cancer from spreading to the next living part.

It is sad what has become of the malls in Baton Rouge, I know malls in general are not as popular as they used to be, but growing up you know how many times me and friends went to Cortana mall on a Friday or Saturday night before going out? I remember meeting people at the mall on a regular basis or introducing people to someone I knew. It was a place to shop but also a social event.

I remember when I was younger than that going with my parents.. I would go to the arcade. My parents used to go.. I'd say twice a month... on Saturdays and I would see people in the arcade I saw before and just talk to them like we knew each other forever. And even middle school aged, it was a place you went with your parents, but then went do your own thing.. Its just sad that no matter where you go today you have to be hyperaware of everything because you never know when someone will open up fire. Its a crazy time to be in.

I’m surprised the Apple Store didn’t move a couple of years ago

You are right. I don’t have kids, but I probably would not let them go.

I was a mall rat in the early 80's
Parents would drop us off with cash and a credit card and pick us up at 8pm
Parents had nothing to worry about. The mall was safe
This is the mall I remember. What happened?

I find it strange that the focus of your post is the mall.

The mall disappearing doesn’t change a single thing about the problem you are referencing.

Went to shake shack and then to Dicks today. The police presence was noticeable. My head was still on a swivel. Not letting thugs dictate my moves in this town.

I think I’ve been once in this last 7 years and I was amazed at how far it had fallen off since my previous visit.

Yep, you're right, which is why no law abiding citizen should visit. Solved that problem!

The mall in Allen TX where something similar happened re-opened about a year after the event.

They tried to remove the concrete blood stains but it didn’t work so they had to remove it and re-pour it.

Honestly don't remember the last time I went there...many years. Don't see a reason I would need to go there.
