Time is the limiter here with contra flow. Once that new fire went up panic took over for the people. Nightmare scenario.

They need to consider doing contra flow on the main flow streets and highways like they do for hurricanes.
If only it was that simple

It looks hopeful they can keep the Sunset fire out of urban areas. I believe there is something of a natural fire break of development/more concrete as the hills level out when they reach Hollywood. Also, the winds are lighter allowing more air drops. Praying it doesn't get worse.

FF just said over scanner that he didn't know if the fire near Nichols Canyon Rd was set intentionally but did not believe it was a result of an ember from another fire

Yeah, the constant theme of all the fires we've had in LA over the past decade is they're relegated to the brush areas in the hills, and don't make it to the densely populated urban areas.

My disgust with Journalism has grown exponentially since I graduated from LSU w a degree in broadcast journalism in 1990.
Success has always been low key measured by ad dollars, but the last 20 yr it has dissolved into a circle jerk of street corner whores.

Maybe someday people will figure out building houses in a tinderbox is a bad idea.
The insurance companies understand this. Apparently it is unfathomable to others.

That's the large part of it. It is called the Wilderness Urban Interface, or WUI for short, and it is being developed more and more every year. The Jasper fire this past Summer in Canada is another perfect example. It is a historic town that is surrounded by the Jasper National Forest. That fire went up on a "normal" fire day and lingered. A critical fire day came along with high winds and it rolled the town. There was no buffer for that town despite a decent land management regime. It is just a constant threat living that close to the wilderness.
It also highlights an issue with prescribed burn planning that plays out regularly. A lot of these towns (pick a western state......CA, NM, NV, CO, etc....they all have these towns and areas) are tourist towns. It is a balancing act with all involved when it comes to controlled burns. If those on the ground and putting together plans could they would burn every day that it is possible, but that isn't feasible when you talk about dumping constant smoke into a town or shutting down popular areas......it hurts business, and that's the main draw for many of these towns.

Theoretical question. After these wildfires are done; does that eliminate all the brush and debris that would have been cleared in a controlled burn and will the city will be safer after the rebuild?

Yes, until it grows back and they continue not clearing it.

Not sure if anyone mentioned this but there must be a lot of EVs, Power Walls and large grid lithium storage batteries emitting lots of hydrogen fluoride fumes.
