This is the result of about 30 years of trying to limit liability due to drinking and it has been supported by the national offices of the fraternities. here's the rub though, when the drinking age was 18 and they allowed beer trucks on campus for big frat parties you almost never heard of kids dying from too much alcohol.
Yep.
Cracking down on and severely limiting drinking causes these kids to go off the deep end when they get the chance to drink. What's better? Having them drinking beer openly or having them go around the corner every 15 minutes and taking shots of vodka because they can't be caught in possession?

I guess the question should be "why didn't someone step up and say hey, this is going a little too far over the edge...let's scale it down a notch"
i dont know man...it was 35 years ago.
my recollection of the planning phase of that particular operation is a little fuzzy
we were young, stupid, and a lot less visible than students of today are.
ETA: this was published in the yearbook that year. much smaller (and private) school, but admin vs greek has been going on in colleges forever. none of this is new

Are you saying a 20 year old drinking is legal?
Huh? I'm saying it's illegal to serve alcohol to underage kids

And LSU already bans common source alcohol and hard liquor at house parties. If they’re trying to ban it at bars and third party events, they’ll quickly realize that rule will never be followed. The bars don’t give a shite what LSU bullshite policy says.
What would keep the houses from leaving campus? I assume the national charters require them to be on campus.
They could call themselves the "Motorycycle less motorcycle club formerly named Delta Kappa Epsilon"
It is crazy to me, the lack of weight that greek alumni have at LSU. Here at Alabama it is really strong and that has created one of the largest greek systems in th country.
I was in a house in the late 80's. We were "hazed" a litle but nothing too bad. We did not consider the appearance conditions (decent clean clothes when on campus) hazing. We also were required to keep the house clean especially immediately after a party. Band quit playing and we got to work cleaning. When breakfast was served the house was spotless. But we only had to do it for one semester and then the next class did it.
When my son joined a house last fall I discovered that each house was required to have janitors and cleaning staff that are state employees. The pledges dont have to do anything. Hell we used to have to serve the food and refill tea glasses. We sang songs that the actives requested during supper.
It was no problem then but now the houses get in trouble if they tell the pledges to wear clean clothes to class. Its ridiculous.

As stated above, it's very hard for a Greek organization to maintain a presence off campus as an unrecognized group. Being affiliated with the university confers a plethora of advantages, financial and otherwise. They could hypothetically move off campus, but instead of 100-150 guys/girls with a mansion, you're a dozen or two at most, in a ramshackle house if you have a house at all, in some neighborhood where everybody else hates your presence and is constantly at odds with you.

For that matter, you could probably redefine most football practices as hazing.
I had this debate with a buddy not long ago, and I'm not sure I can agree completely here. Yes calling mandatory meetings at normal hours or your normal pranks hazing is way too far.
However calling football practice hazing is entirely different whether we're talking pee wee football or professional.
If the point you're making here is that based on those roles it would be considered hazing, which is ridiculous then I agree entirely though.

Meh. “Greeks” didn’t kill anyone, that specific group of losers did.
It's funny how people on here use this narrative when the discussions of black crime rate are very different.

I bet you got married at 22-24 years old too, listen to bad county and think you are “county” when you grew up in the burbs
literally everything you listed is the polar opposite of who i am...except the "hates frats"

LSU is losing kids by the dozen to other SEC schools and this will only make it worse

There is no way a national Greek organization would even support a chapter that wasn't affiliated with a university.

Over half of the greeks I know that went to LSU live out of state and don't give any money back to the University. They may give money to their Frat/Sorority, but not the school itself
Yet they apparently still donate at a higher rate than not greeks...

maybe if the "Greeks" stop killing people then maybe LSU will back off.
I know my pledge ship was pretty rough. I probably only survived because 80% of the time was spent in ICU recovering. Even then, actives tried several times to assassinate me.
Hazing is mild. Stories of hazing are highly exaggerated. The times they even remotely resemble the tall tales of going over the line, it's when one guy (not the whole organization) was a drunk a-hole and they are usually checked for it very, very quickly. The drinking deaths do need to be addressed, but I definitely binge drank just as much outside of fraternity events than I did in the fraternity. In fact, my worst experiences are pretty much all outside of the fraternity. I was never once forced to drink because I was a pledge.

This is what happens when people that know nothing about Greek life try to change it... (I'm looking at you, King).
Oh grow up...what would the perception be if administration did NOTHING after a kid died?
What's more important? Drinking your alcohol at your parties or possibly risking someone's life. LSU wants to minimize the risk of another kid dying and all you idiots care about is how it affects how cool your parties are.

Case and point. I'm not saying that the university should have done nothing. What I'm saying is that the poor execution of this new plan will cause the Greek system to move backwards.
Phrasing this issue as even remotely close to being, "drinking alcohol vs risking someone's life" makes it all too clear that you know nothing at all about how the Greek system works.
It isn't that hard -- the problem in Greek life is a lack of transparency. This new set of rules will exacerbate that tenfold.
