LSU will require applicants to submit at least one letter of recommendation from a counselor, teacher, advisor, or administrator
The whole "required" part sure is going to hurt some people. I guarantee BR public school administrators will do very little to support students with this new requirement.

FYI the Honors College, who recommends a 30 on the ACT and a 3.5 GPA for admission, also has a historically large incoming freshman class this year. The top students were indeed recruited heavily, and it worked.
Separately, if students had a 33 they were eligible for the competitive top scholarships at LSU, most of which are full rides. Not sure when your daughter applied but a 35 would now get her an invite to a top student weekend that includes interviews as part of the scholarship selection process. A 35 does not mean an automatic free ride, nor should it. Rather it's a metric for getting through the first gate, not a holistic admissions process.
Having a letter of recommendation is another positive step toward a better admissions process that seeks to admit both in and out of state top talent, and also reduces applicants who were not seriously considering LSU in the first place.

Why does LSU need better students?
Wouldn’t it be better to have more paying students?
LSU whines about money then they just give it away. Makes no sense.
All we really need is to beat Alabama, Florida, A&M, Auburn, Georgia, State and Ole Miss in football and the rest will take care of itself.

22 on the ACT? If you can’t make a 25+ that’s sad

If you don't see why having better students is a good thing, I don't know what to tell you. Also, how do you propose LSU go about it then?
"We dont care what type of student you are, just whether you will be paying cash, up front."
I'm sure that's a viable, comprehensive recruitment strategy that is certain to succeed.
Oh ok good so this was a joke post

That's an excellent question. I may have the answer. Many schools are pushing the online curriculum. LSU would not need the extra chairs, dorms, cafs, etc. for those attending school electronically.
The decisions about who gets into a traditional student role should be merit based. Those who don't quite cut the GPA or ACT scores could take remedial or refresher courses online to get them up to speed. They can still attain a quality education and should be able to transfer to traditional status once they are caught up.
The extra income from the additional 10k students would pay for the extra staff needed, with the surplus collected being used to alleviate some of the financial burden to the taxpayer. It would be win-win all around.

Freshmen requirements for admission into LSU include a 3.0 grade-point average (!!!) and a composite score of 22 on the ACT.
Isnt this on par with community colleges?

LSU’s glory days were when there were no admission standards other than a GED. College is way too serious these days.
Let TOPS keep their standards but don’t let our flagship just flounder along while trying to be some exclusive club.
This is Louisiana not some exclusive liberal boarding school, wake up and smell the coffee people.
Raising LSU enrollment criteria is bad for all of us.

I disagree. The better the school does in national rankings, the better my diploma looks to others.

The great thing nationally about LSU is the parking perks we get.
Put that diploma on the dash and you can have your pick of handicap parking.
Seriously.
Nobody nationally cares about LSU academics.
All they know us by is Tiger football.

I know TOPS was fully funded but I find it funny that just when TOPS seems to be getting more difficult to earn... LSU increases their admissions standards.
Think they were taking advantage of the free state tuition money?

So if these are now admissions standards, what are the current TOPS standards? I thought TOPS was roughly those numbers - 22 or so on ACT and around 3.0 or 3.2 GPA, which is not exactly stringent. They may have changed though...I haven’t been following too closely.

If LSU has 24,300 actual freshman applications, I’d be surprised. That’s more likely a lot of 2nd and 3rd slots that got filled on ACT score submissions
From high school seniors.
With the supposed crack down on freshman staying in the dorms, there’s nowhere to put anyone else on campus.
The whole thing reeks of academic pandering and positioning.

A college degree today isn’t worth shite. Too expensive, libtard professors, etc. learn how to work hard, sell, whatever your trade and you will be better off long term.

Because only 1.25% of test takers are national merit scholars. Harvard’s acceptance rate is 5.2% of those who applied. As you note, Harvard turns down many NM scholars, it is also true that many, probably most, of Harvard admits did not achieve a NM scholar status. But on statistics, which is what I mentioned, 1.25% of all high school test takers is a more elite group than Harvard’s 5.2% of the approximately 40,000 who applied.
No. You can't compare the two samples. The Harvard applicant pool was self-selected to be significantly different than the pool of PSAT takers.

This is pretty sad.
They should be at least at a 26 ACT.

I'm not sure how I feel about this. I would not have been accepted into LSU under the above standard, and I needed remedial math my first year. I ended up aceing calculus, getting an MBA and have a decent career in commercial banking. Had I listened to those who said I wasn't college material, I could have ended up a BAW with truck nuts and all.
I would be in the same boat, and I also have a masters degree. Most of the people I know today that graduated from college 20 years or more ago other than the ones that are physicians and such would not be admitted, but we are comparing apples and oranges, due to grade inflation a 3.0 today is like a 2.6 30 years ago.

Nicholson Gateway is at least 7-8 apartment buildings. No idea how many rooms, but they are definitely bringing a lot more students on campus than in years past.

To a new yorker or chicago business man, there is no difference from a bama, ole miss, or lsu diploma when it comes across his desk
