LSU- why do people still send their kids there?

I say this as an LSU grad, but with the poor academics, surrounding ghetto on all sides, and budget/leadership issues, I'm not sure why more kids don't go elsewhere.
I am in Texas and there are at least 10+ better options just in state. Is there a reason more LA kids don't look to go to school at places in TX and FL? Is Tops literally the only reason?

It’s cheap, especially compared to Texas schools. Also less competitive

It's the most affordable option for LA residents.
The ghetto stuff is overrated and being addressed. LSU is not the only major university to have sketchy neighborhoods outside it's property.
LSU academics are certainly not poor. They are average at best with some schools being slightly above average.

Amazes me the number of people on TD who live out of state, have 10,000+ posts and hate LSU and/or LA. Why patronize the board?

This is factually false. It's certainly in the cellar of sec schools.

There aren't 10 better public schools in Texas. And per the US News rankings there aren't 10 better period.
LINK
Per their rankings, only UT and TAMU are better than LSU. The others in Texas are all private: Rice, SMU, Baylor, and TCU.

LSU is far and away the best public university in Louisiana. Is your argument that LA higher ed should drain completely into out of state schools?
