LSP Head Hodges retiring Friday, expected to announce run for St. Tammany Sheriff

LSP announced transition ceremony on Friday, qualifying for STP Sheriff starts next Wednesday. Landry has summoned big money backers to fund Hodges campaign. Longtime Slidell Police CAO/spokesman Seuzeneau is the favorite to win Sheriff race.

Everyone likes to appoint and elect LSP and (worse) FBI guys to run police departments and sheriff's offices. One would think that is a good idea because those people seem to come from larger and more prestigious agencies which one would assume leads to more competent leaders.
The issue is that, absent other Law Enforcement experience, those agencies are so far detached from day to day police work that people from those organizations have little to no idea what they are doing. LSP is great at working the interstates and even running some investigations. They don't have a jail, don't handle tax collections and civil matters, don't perform daily criminal patrol of urban, suburban and rural areas, etc.
I would want to hear his qualifications and plans beyond "I was the head of LSP" before I could get behind him.

He doesn't have a choice. Hodges is being forced out. Hodges has dirt on Landry. Landry agrees to help Hodges get next job by fundraising if Hodges leaves Landry. Politics in its purest form.

He’s most likely maxed-out on his retirement as he’s been with LSP for 30 years.

Especially in a rural parish, a lot of sheriffing has little to do with law enforcement. You mentioned tax collections. In our parish, the sheriff has in the past run a youth outdoor skills program. Currently you can put elderly relatives on a list to have deputies check on them periodically. They've even been known to take meemaw to her dr appointment if she doesn't have any other way to get there.

Louisiana ought to have one central public workers retirement system instead of multiple systems for different groups.

If he’s maxed out his years of service at LSP his pension is set for the most part. May as well go accrue it in another department. As long as the entities aren’t in the same pension fund, it wouldn’t be considered double dipping. He just can’t draw on the pension until he’s not working.
