From WWLTV

Louisiana SNAP recipients will face new EBT purchase limits aiming to prevent fraud

quote:

BATON ROUGE, La. — The Louisiana Department of Health announced Friday that Louisiana SNAP recipients will soon see changes to where they can use their EBT cards.

Starting May 26, EBT cards will only work for purchases made in Louisiana and in approved ZIP codes near the state line in neighboring states.

State officials said the change is aimed at reducing fraud and preventing unauthorized out-of-state use of SNAP benefits.

quote:

The policy will not affect people shopping at Louisiana stores or through approved online retailers. Officials also said many ZIP codes near the Louisiana border in Texas, Mississippi and Arkansas are included in the approved purchase areas.

Purchases made outside the approved areas will be blocked under the new policy.

SNAP recipients traveling outside Louisiana can request temporary out-of-state access through the state’s EBT website, by phone or at a local SNAP office. The temporary access automatically expires at the start of the following month, returning the card to the default in-state-only setting.

For more information, including a full list of approved border-area ZIP codes, visit ldh.la.gov/page/electronic-benefits-transfer-ebt or call 888-LAHelp-U (888-524-3578).

I will file this in the Today I Learned Folder.

I didn't know EBT Benefits could be used out of state.

Surprised it wasn't a rule already. Seems like common sense.

It shouldn't be, even in those border zip codes, or online shopping.

I’m with you. It’s LA taxes, it should only be spent in LA, not in TX, MS, or AR

Good.

They've had a lot of problems with hackers draining people's food stamp accounts from NY and CA.

Online shopping is wild. I mean...it's subsistence. Why give them the convenience?

The other day I saw a couple leave a bunch of soda at the self checkout because you can't buy soda with EBT anymore in FL. They walked back to a car full of kids with GA plates. Family on GA food stamps goes on vacation to Orlando. WTF. If I could get some food stamps I could go on vacation too. Where do I sign up?

How do they expect people to receive a legit Tex/Mex meal if they cannot receive it in either Tex or Mex?

If they would have done this in the first place it would have stopped that fraud.

I wonder if Medicaid and its six insurance company managed plans have the same Geo fencing to limit receiving non emergency or non prior authorized care out of state.

nope - unless it’s a true emergency - and even then the hospital has to agree to bill the Louisiana Medicaid program

Reminds me about the lady bitching about not being able to afford to go on vacation when the admin started removing junk food from the benefits and she realized she’d have to start paying for “luxury items” herself

Makes sense to be able to use them nearby, like Poplarville or Natchez.
