re: Louisiana to Limit Out of State Use of EBT Purchases

If we'd move to just sending the basics, no one would want to be on ebt. Create the motivation.

After they do this they should cut EBT use at Sam’s, Amazon and Costco. It’s a sick feeling to work 40 hours a week making $42.60 an hour and have to check out at Sam’s with your bare essentials while the obese family ahead of you checks out 3 buggies of steaks, pork roast, ribs, sausage, and everything else needed for a 20 person bar b q and pays with their EBT cards.

yep - it should be reformulated like the WIC program where only certain things can be bought

There are a lot of nutritionists that work for the USDA - they can come up with menus for families and those ingredients is what can be bought with the EBT

Stores might revolt though

No it doesn’t. They live in LA, it should only be spent in LA. If you’re on government assistance, it shouldn’t be convenient. I actually wish we did away with the EBT and SNAP cards and went back to actual stamps.

I always want to get defensive when I see all the whining about EBT around here, but I know it's expected. I need to just let it be. I recognize it's mostly about preventing fraud, but often times I feel y'all want to restrict a bit too much.

My sister is mentally disabled since birth and now currently on dialysis and my parents have to purchase additional protein for her according to her doctor. Actually would be nice to have that covered since my parents are older and on Social Security.

So we have one dude bitching, because a family is shopping in person at Sams or Costco (probably still a better savings overall for them) and he worked hard, but yet we don't like people being able to just order from home too. Which is it? So my parents worked hard all their life as well and put money into this system and now they shouldn't use these benefits, because it bothers some people working hard now and seeing it?

Again I realize this is about preventing fraud, but I really don't see why some care so much if protein is allowed. Would never buy that expensive $80 protein, but the protein we get is still like $30 and not sure if it lasts the whole month for her needs. If someone is blowing $80 on protein they sure won't have much left over to shop for other things. There is still a maximum allowance and it's probably not as much as some may think. The absolute maximum allowance for one person is in the 200s. If they blew $80 on it with that protein that could be nearly half. Maybe some of y'all should welcome that. That's less money to buy all the steaks out of town you are worried about.

Do all states allow this?

I think all of us here realize that there are legitimate reasons for using EBT, just as there are many people on disability that are disabled.

Given from what I've seen and read here, most of us would personally help her, or your parents, should the need arise.

If she's in West St Tammany, and receiving care locally, I can personally recommend a food pantry (USDA certified) that can provide immediate assistance.
