That's 10 more meals for those babies. Think of the children!!! They go the entire Summer without meals unless the school gives them out!!!

In reality, Summer P-EBT SNAP benefits are now paid to a large majority of LA public school students, about $395 per student.

That's a harsher penalty than most car jacker kids are receiving.

I saw this article the other day, and the article literally right below it was about Louisiana having a teacher shortage of 2000 teachers. Very awesome.

I firmly believe that school should be year round for all students. Not just the stupid ones. A three month break in between lessons is a horrible idea. Especially when you have to use the first three months of the new school year reviewing what they forgot from the year before.

Shipping kids off to be raised by the state would probably be an improvement.

Christ, dropping them off in the woods to be raised by wolves would probably be an improvement.

This idea is about 200 years too late. Probably longer than that.

Don't worry though, 30 hours of summer school is going to fix it.

I’m not going to lie… I definitely figured cell phone use would increase literacy rate since people would be reading/writing far more often…

Boy was I wrong

I seriously doubt that kids can't read because they took off 5 days for bogus weather events. These kids can't read because their parents (parent) don't care about their education.

Didn't say it would "fix it all" but it's a start.

I'll agree with it starts at home.

Ooooooor, you just just stop letting the dumbass kids pass. Grade forgiveness, no discipline, et. Public school is crumbling in the state. Thank God my older ones are almost done.

What really needs to happen is the state needs to make it a lot easier to fire ineffective teachers. My wife teaches teachers and is accountable for their performance. She tells me every day about how so many teachers just don’t give a shite about following standards and cut corners every day but it’s so hard to fire them so the schools are stuck with them until they essentially get fed up with corrective action enough to finally just quit. THAT’S the problem. We make it very difficult to fire a teacher in this state.

I agree there are teachers that don't give a rip, but who exactly are we going to replace these teachers with? I don't think there are tons of qualified teachers lining up to teach in this environment.

That leads me to my next point, and I think we can all agree that the government needs to get out of the way. All the federal and state regulations cause all the school districts to hire a bunch of compliance and administrative positions that have no direct effect on actually educating kids. Part of that regulation is not letting schools expel kids and send them to the alternative school. Also it seems like nearly half of kids have some sort of IEP that requires teachers to make individual tests for nearly every IEP kid.

These are part of the "standards" the federal/state governments are mandating that teachers hate.

Good. Most kids who get bad grades are bad little shits and deserve more school and less street time.

As a parent of children where me and my wife both work, year round school would be much easier

It makes more sense to do it. We don’t live in farmers time with stay at home moms anymore

Summer schools for a 5 or 6 year old is ridiculous.

Not reading at a certain level at that age is directly tied into incarceration statistics. Fixing the literacy issues could have a huge positive impact on crime.

Although, it doesn't fix the home issue that is the root of most failing students. Unfortunately we cannot fix all issues that aren't being seen as issues by those who are the problem.

How long before it comes out they figured a way to use this to get more money from tax payers? We all know this is the only reason they are contemplating this.
