I've been in Texas longer than I lived on Louisiana, so yes, I'm now a Texan

After 18 years in TX, I think of having LA roots and love my heritage, but I am grateful to be a Texan.

You can still be a Texan. The native borns like to use “native” as a qualifier simply to indicate they are more Texan than many Texans.

For me what made a difference is when I had a son born in Texas. As parents, we learned that Texas has a pledge of allegiance that kids recite in school. Goes like this:


And of course I had to master a smoked brisket. It wasn’t good enough to simply feel good about it, it had to earn the blessings of other Texans.

Internalizing the identity of a Texan also requires valuing your independence to the point of expecting your political leaders to not give you “free” stuff. You expect to pay for your environment and good schools via property tax. It’s the same pride that comes from not having a tax on your productivity - that nonsensical commie income tax shite.

We still value our Louisiana heritage - growing up poor in one of the illiteracy capitals of the US whose one redeeming quality is the food. So we take our food culture with us to share with Texans and make this place even better. Texans respect and appreciate that.

I knew my kids (even the La born ones) had arrived as Texans when they could articulate the benefit of building a wall. But they wanted more than a southern border wall. They wanted a wall to the East to keep the delusional hillbillies out.

Once you’ve reached this level, you’re a Texan because you understand why. It’s the last bastion of freedom in the US and our country needs us.

i am a proud Texan, but even i know this is bullshite. Texas is damn near purple and will be blue in our lifetimes.

Alaska is probably the ACTUAL last bastion on freedom. maybe Idaho for lower 48, but that is changing rapidly too.
