re: Louisiana people living in Texas - Are you a Texan?

I try my best to hold on to my Louisiana roots, still consider myself a Louisianian. Moved here for college and never went back to Louisiana.
Louisianians in Texas fall into a couple groups:
Born and grew up in South Louisiana, strong cajun cultural upbringing? Probably not going to claim yourself as Texans no matter how long you are there.
New Orleanians - same. They'll always be from New Orleans if they grew up in that culture. Hell, I know a girl raised in Texas by New Orleans people and she considers herself NOLA over being Texan.
probably also matters when you moved. Did you leave for college or just after? Or did you move when you were in school and living under your parents roof?

I've been in Texas 5 years now and plan to stay here for the long haul. That being said I will never consider myself a Texan just a Texas resident, Louisiana will always be home.

My family moved to DFW in 1998, but Louisiana is still home to me.
I’m also of the rare breed that was born in Shreveport, but absolutely hate the cowboys

Internalizing the identity of a Texan also requires valuing your independence to the point of expecting your political leaders to not give you “free” stuff. You expect to pay for your environment and good schools via property tax. It’s the same pride that comes from not having a tax on your productivity - that nonsensical commie income tax shite.
This is laughable. The lack of an income tax is offset by the sales and property tax. Don’t get me started on “mud tax”.
Oh also let’s mention if you want to get around efficiently you have to take toll roads that are built by European companies.
People only come to Texas for the economic benefit and the proximity to Louisiana. Take those two out the equation, there’s very little Louisiana influence in Tx

I see this all the time with immigrants to the US, whether from Nigeria, Mexico, or Pakistan. They retain their culture.

We had the capacity but the federal government told Texas there would be massive fines levied against the state if they increased output by taking advantage of this excess capacity at coal and gas power plants.

I blame Abbott for backing down. He only just recently found his balls, though, so maybe he's learned that Fed Gov is not his friend.

I’ve now lived 23 years in Louisiana and 23 in Texas. I’ve never considered myself a Texan although wife & kids born in Texas.
Also have learned that I have some interesting direct ancestors from early days of Texas. Groce, Waller, Goodrich families and two ancestors that signed Texas Declaration of Independence.

Ok sure. Believe whatever they spoon fed you. The fact was they turned the power off and people died. There’s no politicizing or disputing that. All I hear is excuses to why the “Texas power grid” can’t keep the power on.

I have been in Texas longer than I was in LA but still consider LA home.
Texas is no longer JR Ewing, real cowboys and the DC cheerleaders. People have come from all over because of the economy, not to suddenly wear cowboy boots. Dallas Fort Worth is nothing like it was in the 80s. Austin is more looney tunes than it was in the 80s, and the border area is less American/Texan than the 80s.
I stay here because the economy is better, it's safer, there is more to do, health care is better, schools are better, and you can get a direct flight just about anywhere. Plus, this is now home base for my kids.
No, I'm not a Texan in the classic sense (pre 2000), but today I guess I'm just as much post-2000 Texan as anyone else here in suburban utopia.

i am a proud Texan, but even i know this is bullshite. Texas is damn near purple and will be blue in our lifetimes.
We’ve been hearing this for the past 30 years. What ends up happening is more freedom loving people flee the commie states to move here.

Alaska is probably the ACTUAL last bastion on freedom. maybe Idaho for lower 48, but that is changing rapidly too
Very few people actually flee to Alaska. Northern Canada is not as appealing as Texas.

It’s on its way to being California 2.0
California used to be largely conservative and eventually turned into what it is today.
It happened to Colorado. It can and will happen to Texas. First the dark red fades to light red then it turns purple then it turns blue.
It’s coming yall get ready.

It is happening and it is frightening. It amazing how much DFW area alone has changed politically since I moved here in 2006 after Katrina.

I hope you're right. The population centers / cities are all locked in blue now. They won't be going back. The kids of illegal aliens are getting old enough to vote. We'll see.

That doesn't make it not a bastion. Its inaccessibility is what is keeping it free, by and large.

The centers are yes but the surrounding counties are more often than not pretty red.
Montgomery County north of Houston for example. Extremely conservative. Trump had a rally in Conroe. It’s big time maga country.
Fort bend county southeast of Houston is extremely blue. Outside of that, all counties around Harris are red. Some being as high as 80% red.
