You’re probably correct, but there are ways to do it better IF you want to stay in the state.

If you move to a more politically friendlier climate (I assume you’re conservative and New Orleans sucks politically) and you have a decent/nice house with a whole house generator, a lot of your issues could be alleviated.

It surprises me how many people do not have whole house generators. With the way that most people overspend on cars, houses, vacations, etc I don’t get why they don’t spend the money on a generator.

shite, people I know evacuating sometimes spend half or all what they could have spent on a generator just evacuating.

The Northshore has what you’re looking for if you stay in state.

Why/how is the Northshore better than Lafayette?

I love Louisiana, but I left. There were a lot of things to love about the state. Most notably the state is a "Sportsman Paradise". The problem with that? The water is poisoned. I worked in the oil field in the seventies and eighties. I heard first-hand accounts of bad stuff (really bad stuff) dumped in the back waters, canals, and streams. Now everyone back in my hometown is dying of liver cancer.

Legislation that established the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) helped stop deadly pollution, but unfortunately for some areas of Louisiana, and its citizens, it's too late.

Some of the stories I heard of wreckless pollution are heartbreaking.

I found my paradise. They call this heaven-on-earth the Texas Hill Country.

Calm down! lol

I didn’t say it was. Most people in this thread are talking about New Orleans (and what they don’t like about it).

I prefer to be farther east towards Florida and my business is on the Northshore.

I have nothing against Lafayette and never said the Northshore was “better”. Although it is better for me personally.

Meh, I know quite a few people with whole house generators that had failures during extended use in storms. I’d get one, but I’d probably only “need” it every 10-15 years.

I wouldn’t evacuate because of the power issues associated with a storm. I’d leave because of the danger to myself or family.

Let’s face it, we can all rationalize living in this state. But we cannot begin to argue that the climate, environment (political or geographic) infrastructure, opportunities and just about every thing else is more of a hindrance than conducive to staying here.

Oh, I’m calm, just pointing out that there are more options other than the Northshore. A few years ago we made the decision to leave New Orleans because we were going to soon be starting a family. We chose Lafayette. Not hating on the Northshore, it’s just not the only “nice” place to raise a family here.

It’s such a special place but it’s sad to see the decline and nobody giving a shite

I bitch about life in Nola and LA a lot but times like these don’t make me want to leave. In fact it inspires a little confidence in me.

Seeing our neighbors and families come together and support each other always brings me a smile.

There’s bad storms everywhere, there’s shitty politicians eberywhere, and there’s issues everywhere. It maybe worse here, but the people and my friends and family outweigh that.

Damn. High on copium with that post. Louisiana is bottom 5 states across many major statistics and if you can’t seem to find more than 3 areas better than Louisiana, it’s because you are low IQ.

I lived in Chicago for years and its the same crap (give and take some issues) as New Orleans.

NOLA somehow has worse roads despite only Chicago having frost heaves. Both have utterly incompetent government and rampant crime that is getting way worse. Chicago's traffic is far worse. Every time I have a long drive down Saint Charles and I get stuck in slow traffic, I just think of the long slog to O'hare at rush hour on Friday.

Long story short I'm at the point in my life where a clean mid-size city is sounding very appealing. I'm not a single kid anymore, I don't go out 2-3 days a week with my friends, I like focusing on family and work.

I’m out in a few years. For all the reasons you mentioned though I’m not as old as you are (41) this is old been old. I’ll rent my house and bounce.

It's tough because family is here and it is home, but for me, I can't stay. The normal weather and the crime combined are too much for me.

In the back of my head I've told myself there's a small chance I'll come back to Louisiana at some point, but this hurricane was probably the last straw for that.

Lived here all my life. Used to be ok. Didn’t have to worry about getting shot just trying to party on Bourbon Street. It certainly is unique. Like others have said, family keeps a lot of people here.

Moved to Scottsdale from Baton Rouge back in April. I don’t miss LA one bit. Sure, I miss family and friends, but not to the point where I want to move back. I’ll never move back. This was the best thing I’ve ever done.
