Living in Alaska

How many of you have lived or are currently living in Alaska? I’m seriously tempted to pack up and move there as I have always been fascinated by the natural beauty of the state. For those of you who live there, what are the pros and cons of living in Alaska? I can imagine it’s very different than living in Louisiana.

Ive never lived there, but I'd venture to guess that the winters suck

Highest rape per capital in the country.

Never lived there but been there a lot. Most beautiful place I've ever seen. If you like the outdoors there's no better place. Anchorage is a shithole, crime and drugs everywhere. Alaska is having economic troubles so unless you have an independent source of income or can live off the grid it might be tough to make it. You'll find some really great people there, and also some incredibly trashy people.

I think it largely depends on where in Alaska you live. The lows in Juneau in the winter average 23 degrees which isn't awful. The perpetual darkness probably sucks though. To me the biggest con would be how expensive everything is there.

My parents are retired and have a camp they live in from Early May till late September. My dad said screw the heat. My dad also has a brother that lives up there year round.
Come home with Halibut/Salmon ect..
Kenai area SE of Anchorage.

Several people have told me below zero in the interior is more comfortable than the milder, but humid, coastal temperatures.

Would seriously consider living in Girdwood. Close enough to Anchorage which has all the amenities you would need. At the base of a ski resort. Surrounded by wild life refuges. On the water. Town has enough bars, dining options and groceries to live a comfortable life.
Winter is mild there actually, especially compared to the interior. Weather is similar to Portland or Vancouver, rather than 10' deep, balls cold, snowed in Alaska.

Kenai/Sodoltna area is where I would go if I moved up there full time. It's convenient to Seward/Homer/Anchorage. You aren't really missing any amenities in that area.
Plus you have st. Elias brewing company right there

Was stationed there for 3 yrs:
Pros
The most beautiful state and it ain't close; mountains & wildlife are 2nd to none
Summers with all the sunshine and temps normally aren't hot (in Anchorage anyway & yes I've read about the highs lately)
Fishing and hunting are the shite in the summer....and you can ice fish too and don't need a cooler
Northern lights
Glaciers
Winter festivals with the ice sculptures are pretty cool
Great titty bars
Cons:
Earthquakes are actually quite common & they suck
7 months of shoveling snow
7 months of driving in snow and ice
A few months of darkness; yes it gradually gets dark but still
Break-up (when all the snow and ice melt).....dirty and ugly
You can't really drive to another state; yes I'm aware of the Alaskan-Canadian Hwy but no way I'd drive that
Rather expensive to live
You only get about 6 or 7 weeks of really good weather
