Palmer is the best place. Loved it when I lived there.

I live in rural Alaska now and I love it. Village life is hard but if your heart is in it, it can be very fulfilling living a subsistence lifestyle

Loved Palmer too

Where did you move? Bethel?

I've always wanted to spend more time in the Noatak and Kobuk areas.

I know the climate would be much more to my liking. I spend a ton of time outdoors when we travel to Colorado during the summer. Not so much in a Louisiana summer. I'm a sucker for the mountains too.

Only concerns are cost of living and distance from family. Well that and earthquakes.

Not many big Quakes in SE. Cost of living, mainly housing, is pretty high.

The big downer is the cloudy weather, but that seems to be shifting somewhat dramatically in the past few years.

The perpetual darkness probably sucks though

Nah, its a myth. Shortest day in Juneau is about 5.5 hours of sunlight

It's not a myth, it depends on where you are in Alaska. In Fairbanks in the winter the sun doesn't come up for a month. In Anchorage you get about 20 hours of darkness. Yes it's a gradual thing, both decreasing sunlight and increasing sunlight.

Yeah. I hear the SE has more of a PNW vibe to it. I would probably fit in more there.

My SO was born on Kodiak island and grew up there for the first 10 years.

We talk about taking a trip often. I've always been fascinated with the kodiak bear, id like to see some in the wild.

read Alaska by James Michener . if you are going to move there at least invest the time to read the 1000 pages. the last several chapters are very appropriate for today. there are plenty of used houses for sale by persons who left after the winter

It does. Fairbanks gets about 3.5 hours of sunlight at Solstice, the days grow longer pretty quickly after that.

Alaska is a weird place with weird as frick people. Some people love it, some people hate it. I fell into the hate it category. You get desensitized to the scenery just like everywhere else and then it just becomes where you live. Glad I don’t live there anymore, I’m not a big fan of cold weather and really hate snow.

As for the sunlight argument, you mostly miss it. Kids are in school and adults are at work. It gets hard during those short days with feeling little to no sun.

I was there in the winter I believe twice and never saw the sun either time....seriously. Granted I was only there a couple of days each time tho.

ETA: it was a long time ago so maybe my CRS is kicking in

I lived in Ketchikan, Alaska in the mid80s for a year when I was 15-16 years old. Not a day went by that that I didn't see something that made me stop and just stare in amazement. Of course, I smoked a whole lot of dope then. Still, it's a beautiful place.

Been to Alaska twice, loved it but I’ll be damned if I would want to live there.Ideal scenario would be to be rich enough to have summer home there and come home in the winter.I did the mostly dark winter thing in Iceland, got very old.
Awe inspiring thinking about the trappers and prospectors in the old days, had to be some tough mothers.

So you're saying the OP should not move to Juneau? :rimshot:

ETA: Late to the game on that one, not surprised.
