Sounds like Alaska is a great place to visit (can confirm that it is) and a shitty place to live.

The perpetual darkness probably sucks though

Nah, its a myth. Shortest day in Juneau is about 5.5 hours of sunlight.

You can't really drive to another state; yes I'm aware of the Alaskan-Canadian Hwy but no way I'd drive that
it isn't as bad as you think. I've driven back and forth on it twice. You just really need to plan it out more than anything. And don't pass up a fuel stop once you are close to half a tank

I've been to Anchorage and Fairbanks. Both in winter months too.

It's not that bad in Anchorage. Couldn't do Fairbanks, gets way too cold there. But Anchorage is actually pretty nice and rather moderate temperature wise(for Alaska).

It's not so much the cold that would bother me, its the fact its always fricking dark in the winter. I'd get up at 10am and it would still be dark.

Depends on where you live, and what you like. Alaska is like California in that every place is very different from every other place. Juneau is a great place to live, high standard of living and it's like most West Coast places politically and socially.

Most coastal towns kick arse. the interior is a bit more rough and rugged.

The villages suck. Stay far away.

It's not all scenic, but destruction bay is beautiful, but it has been the worst stretch of the highway all 4 times I've been on the highway. The drive through Banff/Jasper is otherworldly, though not actually on the ALCAN

I have family there. It is beautiful during the summer. Shitty during the winter. IMO, the people are shitty. Similar to rural south. They claim to work hard, but they seem lazy to me. Look into the PNW. You have mountains and wildlife, but better weather. You also are "close" to civilization. You have pro sports and great cities.

The drive from Anchorage to either Valdez or Fairbanks can't be matched anywhere.

I like the stretch from Destruction Bay to Haines Junction. Kluane is gorgeous.

You're probably thinking of the Mat-Su area

Coastal Ak has some hard working people. Commercial fishermen, etc. Very northern European/Scandinavian.

Juneau might be a place I'd end up in a few years. Good to know.
