it is "competitive" because lazy dad's like the ones in this thread don't play catch with their kids
This is very true. If dads still took their kids to baseball games, played catch with their boys, played wiffleball and played baseball video games most boys would be competitive at baseball. It doesn't take much and Rec Leagues would be greatly improved.
Nowadays boys don't know how to catch at age 9-10.

The travel ball drama I've heard about would be a great basis for a dramadey TV show.
The coach's son's best friend getting cut for another kid that is marginally better.
Lil Maverick's surprise show up at Yankees tryouts when he has been a lifelong Brave and his parents are best friends with the Braves coaches.
Braxtyntyn's parents were ostracized from the main parent group for some sort of perceived slight or breach of some unwritten ball parent rule.

Was there such popularity for little league baseball back during the 1970’s and 80’s ? Obviously, the population is greater now that 40 years ago.
Why does it seem every child in my hometown are involved in sports ?

Exactly. Also, apparently every single cheer team that goes to "nationals", wins.

Your first two boys didn't have any skill. That's why they quit.
I hit lead off and played short stop for an aau team when I was 13 that every starter played college ball and farther except for me bc I chose to play football in high school.
Guess I quit because I didn't have any skill. Btw, good luck coaching your son Braxton.

Parents
True story from last summer at my son's TBall game:
One of our players got thrown out at 2B, this lady behind me says "these are babies - they shouldn't call them out"
Later on, a kid from the other team appeared to get tagged while running from 2B to 3B and this same lady goes apeshit "HE'S OUT!!!! HE'S OUT!!!! HOW THE HELL DO YOU MISS THAT CALL!!!!!"

No…it’s not a bad thing to have kids involved in sports. It’s hopefully a change for kids to enjoy team building and physical fitness.
My question is why are there more kids involved in baseball and soccer now than in any previous generation ?

Travel ball also
Travel ball is the absolute WORST. Play ALL DAY Saturday…just to get your seeding for Sunday. Last Sunday, my step son’s day consisted of an opening game at 0900, with the last game ending around 2030. That’s with HOURS in between games. Freaking miserable. And that’s nearly every weekend.

I think the reason for an increase in focus on baseball and soccer is this:
White suburban parents think this is the best chance for little Johnny to go pro/d1. So they don’t “waste” time on basketball and football

Be ready for the reality check.
Don’t you think that’s exactly what these kids

Every kid at the cages has bags full of bats, that cheesy baseball hair, wearing chains, and have Kenny Powers glasses on. They all seem to be a bunch of punks.
are also thinking?

This is less about trying to make everyone feel good and more about ensuring people keep paying the entry fees and parents paying admission/march/concessions.

I know a poster on this site that cleared out a room in his house to display all his son’s travel ball rings.
He paid for them in coaches fees and team fees and fundraisers as well....turning cash into plastic rings...travel ball life.

This is a myth. It is an easy funny gotcha.
Most parents just want their kid to play a team sport and have fun. Team sports are proven to be great for kids.
But, the truth is most would rather do League ball they are just full of kids who are not good and kids whose parents are trashy.
At the end of the day people want their kids to hang out with their peers, so you are stuck with Tournament/Private Teams. That leads to the competitive arms race. Most of the kids on private teams are not that good. Their parents just do the bare minimum with them to make them competitive. It isn't that much work.
I have been around competitive sports a long time and no one walks around thinking lil Johnny is going D1 or Pro.

My son just started playing little league. I'm one of the coaches. I didn't really want to coach, but nobody else would. So far all of the kids really love it. I haven't had to deal with any unruly parents yet although I know it's coming.

Every area is different. But I don't think people avoid park and rec leagues "to be among their peers".
There are dozens of motivating factors for travel ball and for park and rec. Your take is too simplistic.

There were baseball tournaments last weekend at the same facility where we had soccer games. It is amazing how these baseball kids, and parents, all look EXACTLY the same.
Kids all got the peach fuzz stash, flatbill, and walk around like the Fonz. Dads got a flatbill too and obviously misses leg day. Mom has on too much makeup, white claw in the tumbler, and sneaks cigs in the parking lot.
