Exactly right. And if the kid isn’t wearing the rainbow-mirrored shades sitting upside-down (very important) on top of the cap, they ain’t doin it right.

Travel ball is the worst. Everyone thinks their kid is the next Derek Jeter.

I find it very disturbing how kids nowadays will play the same sport 12 months out of the yr, down to the little ones. That isn’t fun and exciting, it’s cult like. I’m all for letting my kids enjoy extra curricular activities, but no way in hell am I using 100% of my free time so they can play 365.
This. My kids play all rec sports, but theres no way in hell Im driving all over the gulf coast every weekend with the Braxxtynns and Mavericks of the world. frick that.

Maybe those bats help. I was at a local park last week playing tennis and as I was walking to my car there was little league team practicing. Guessing these kids were 10-12 and they were hitting dingers every other swing. When I played, there was maybe one dinger a season.

those 90 kids in the rec leagues would make it far more competitive and obviously elevate the competition in those leagues.
but if they could do that, they wouldn't be in rec league

I was answering another posters question on what happened to REC league. The answer is all your good kids left to play travel ball because it was 'elite'. More kids left and more parents felt REC league wasn't competitive enough so new travel ball teams were formed.

When I was a kid growing up in south LA it wasn't Little League.
It was Dixie Youth League and the patch on every kids uniform shoulder was the stars and bars. That wouldn't fly these days.

All I got.

I’ll never ever understand tigerdroppings perpetual hate for kids playing baseball
This whole thread is stupid. Yes, some people go way overboard with the nonsense.
In my experience that’s one out of two different types of people:
(1) the parent who never played baseball, and doesn’t know anything about baseball but they force (or allow) their child to play year round
(2) the overzealous dad who actually did play back in the day and now his life still revolves around it and his son playing
But those examples aren’t as common as the OT would want you believe
Can’t believe this is the same place that complains about kids playing fork knife and/or staying inside all the time. Y’all can’t have it both ways…… or maybe you can. Who the frick am I to say any different
TLDR - the stereotypes about travel ball can be accurate, but for the most part, it’s blown way way out of proportion here

Exactly. Also, apparently every single cheer team that goes to "nationals", wins.
This is so stupid
Why can’t y’all understand that there are different divisions in every different age group?

Social media happened.
My parents both grew up with Carl Stotz (founder of Little League) in Williamsport. According to them, his basic intent was just to provide enough organization so the little kids would know if they showed up at this time and place, there would be enough of them for a real game.
Also according to them, he got pretty disgusted by what the adults did with it over time.
ETA: From Wikipedia:
quote:
Carl Stotz, a highly principled man, left Little League Baseball Inc. in late November 1955 over honest and valid philosophical differences centered on commercialization and central control issues with the management of L.L.B. Inc., of which Carl's conscience, would not permit him to remain.

As someone who has umpired both rec and travel I will say it is not the majority, but... In my experience a rec team will have maybe 1 parent or player in a game I call that fits the mold. There will be multiple parents, kids, and coaches that fit that mold in every game in a travel tournament. So while it's not all travel ball or even most, it is still very obvious in comparison between rec and travel, and if someone has only experienced one and then experiences the other. I can certainly see how that would cause them to see travel ball in that light.

I agree with you, but so what???
Anytime you take a large group of people, there’s ALWAYS going to be some assholes. You could take a group of 15 people that are faithful church-goers, and you’re more than likely going to have one or possibly more assholes… Baseball parents are no different, but like I said, this place blows it way out of proportion
I’d wager that over half of the people in here railing on ‘travel ball’ have never been involved in it, or got involved with a poorly run team/organization

How long have you been on the OT?! Is it your opinion that this board as a whole is fair level-headed and unbiased? Travel Ball is just like breed of 'peace' and 'dindu', if statistically one group is more likely then it becomes a blanket by this board (and most people to be fair). You're judged by your worst members. That's just how it is.
If you and your family can afford it and enjoy it, then enjoy it. The opinion of people who live for nsfw and teacher posts shouldn't have an effect on you.

It doesn’t at all, I just think they’re idiots for their shortsighted opinions
I’ll say this… the one thing that does get under my skin is the whole ‘travel ball names’ meme… it just sucks.. I’ve never coached a Braxtyn, Jaxtynn, Colt, Brayydynn, etc… yes, some names are more common than others with this generation, but you could go into any classroom in the country and see the same shite. It’s not a travel ball thing
