I'd have to go back 20+ years but I had a pair of Kicker CompVR 10's in a custom non-ported box, RF Punch 800 amp, Blaupunkt receiver, Pioneer 4x10 rear speakers, and Infinity Reference 4x6" plate front speakers in the dash. All in a reg. cab 1985 S-10.

What'd you pay for that sucker?

I don’t kiss and tell, but I did a fair deal with the lady. She didn’t know what it was worth. We blue booked it together in “good” condition, and I paid the bill to get it running. That was then subtracted from the blue book value.

I own some recent vintage Cerwin-Vega bookshelf speakers. I think they're called SL-5Ms.

The are exactly what you'd expect from CV: solid, heavy, and generous with the bass. The crossovers use quality components but are poorly designed by most standards. There's a chasm in the middle-high area of the frequency response curve that makes them pretty bad as anything but a party speaker.

The Dayton B-652s I have in my office and the B-652 AIRs I have in my living room easily blow away the Cerwin-Vegas (at < half the price). I bet a CV 12" would still rattle the windows pretty damn well, though.

All about the budget. Always thought good speakers made a bigger difference than the other components but they need to be at least close.

My preference. Was always speakers. Head unit. Amps. Signal processes.

If I wanted a mid level system would consider a good head unit with dsp and crossovers built in. Decent 4 ch on highs. Decent sub amp. Good 12" ported ready built.

Like the ability to fade on the highs. Prefer the mix of volume and sound of a 12", but 10s are great on the sound if big boom is not a concern.

Been out of the loop long enough now that I have no clue on amps or speakers. I have kept up enough to know Pioneer for ease of use and decent sound is my choice in head unit. Especially if going cheaper using high power head unit to drive the highs with a good mono block on lows.

Makes me nostalgic. I used to love pursuing through the Crutchfield magazines looking at audio systems for my beat up car in high school.

Settled on pioneer CD player, 4 pioneer speakers and a 15 inch infinity sub. Might have to go speaker shopping soon after writing this.

I love 12s. I did have 3 JL 10s in my Civic then in my Grand Cherokee. There is much difference in the big boom by two 12s, but the 10s are more precise when listening to rock or alternative music.

Alpine for the win

I’ve had a few cars and different systems from ‘99-present but have never had anything cleaner than my all Alpine system (deck, 6.5 Type S, 3 ways in doors and on back dash, and 2 - 10” Type S subs in a sealed box with a 200w Alpine amp in the trunk) in my ‘97 Accord (around 2004-2005).

I dont need to beat the block down, but I do like good clean sound when listening to music. I recently changed out the 3.5” on the dash and sub in the 2020 f150 I bought in December because it didn’t sound good enough (B&O is trash compared to the Sony system in my ‘17 f150). Replaced with Kicker Comps and it sounds better. Still think I’m gonna’ change the 6x9s and 6.5s in the front and rear doors too.

Had an all Kenwood Excelon system and their version of an amplified Bazooka in my 1991 Geo Prism back in the day.

Then I switched to an Eclipse Head Unit which was even more

Nowadays you have to mount a loudspeaker from a drive thru chicken joint outside the vehicle so you can annoy everyone within a 3 block radius.
