Let's talk about what are some true signs of alcoholism (longish)

Much like the outdated food pyramid I grew up on (11 servings of bread and pasta a day wtf?) I feel like we are taught as early as middle school some heinously bad guidelines on what makes someone have an alcohol problem. I remember some checklist boxes like "have you ever not remembered things after drinking?" or "if you drink [X amount] in one day or per week you have a problem". These are so horribly bad because something like this I don't think you can whittle down to a simple number that works universally. So I was thinking about the topic the other day bc a family member of mine said "omg I think I might be turning into an alcoholic" because they make themselves a drink 2 or 3 times a week after work, and came up with my personal definition of what should actually be cause for concern with someone, broken down into 5 categories.
Personal/Family Relationships
Is your drinking becoming an issue with your spouse/SO/children/family/friends. Do you act worse around them to the point they don't like being around you when you drink. Can you not control your actions when you drink, have you ever abused family or friends due to being under the influence
Work/School
I'm sure most of us have slept through a class in college due to hangover but this category is going beyond that. Are you missing deadlines at work, or even going to work intoxicated. Are you fricking up your routine tasks or missing client meetings, or letting grades slip because of drinking. Outside of a random day of playing hooky, is your professional or academic career diminishing due to drinking
Financial
Are you spending more than you really need to on alcohol, to the detriment of other important aspects of your life? Like if you're living paycheck to paycheck but decide to buy booze instead of paying the gas bill. Or even if you are a little more well off, sacrificing kids' braces or sports season because the money allocated for that went to alcohol instead
Health
This one is obvious but if you are having health problems (besides a headache from a hangover) that's a pretty good sign. If your liver is failing or your doctor is sitting you down and point blank saying you need to cut back, that's a good sign of an issue.
Legal
Another one that's fairly obvious. You may only drink 3 or 4 times over the course of the year but if you get arrested each time that's not a good sign. Do you have multiple DUIs, do you get into domestic disuputes or fights when drink, have you caused damage to person or property when drinking, has alcohol been the cause of being jailed/sued/etc
In my opinion, those are really the only 5 criteria that should make someone consider that they have an alcohol problem. You could have someone that drinks every day, 7 days a week without fail, but it's simply a glass of wine with dinner. Or a dude who drinks twice a month, only on Saturday, but drinks 24 beers each time. I don't think either of those people are necessarily alcoholics at face value although any high school guidesheet would tell you they absolutely are. To me, it is 100% entirely irrelevant how much you drink, how often you drink, what you drink, or anything like that as long as you are good to go in the 5 categories above.
Thoughts?

This.
But the catch is, one has to be honest with his self-appraisal and alcoholics are far from honest. Self cannot see self. Others’ opinions are vital.

One of my fraternity brothers from college just died of alcoholism. He went from making several hundred thousand a year with a huge house in a swanky area and a loving family- to dying alone of liver disease; homeless, divorced and penniless. He checked off every one of your boxes along the way.

Yikes.
I'll stop eventually. I hope.

It's different for everyone, but you are correct in saying when it starts to affect relationships. But, the point of no return imo is when you start to have physical withdrawals from not drinking. Also, going through withdrawals from alcohol is one of the only detoxes (besides benzos) that can kill you by having seizures.
If you have to have a drink to stop your "shakes", you are going to need professional help to stop drinking. I have been to rehab for opioids about 15 years ago and the alcoholics that came in were in worse shape than just about everyone else. One guy came in in a fricking wheelchair and after a week or so when he got through his physical detox he was back walking around and looked a million times better. Alcoholism will absolutely wreck your body.

People need to read alcohol explained by William porter and/or this naked mind by Annie grace.

those 5 are spot on, but you can also replace alcoholism with any kind of destructive addiction so you're spot on for a lot of things. drugs, gambling, etc.

There’s no such thing as alcoholism that’s just something that bitch wives made up. You can’t get hooked on beer

Recovering alcoholic here. Last drink was 4/24/2006
I really like your criteria. I was suffering badly in 4 out of 5 categories. I had a few brushes with the law but nothing major. I used to think i never got a dui because i outsmarted the cops. Now i realize that cops are pretty shitty at there jobs.
The only perspective you're missing that the medical criteria of "x number of drinks, x days of the week" covers is catching the alcoholic sooner. Since its a progressive problem, perhaps some could stop before its full blown. Of course, drunks are always in denial so maybe not

If you're saying that noticing a rise in those numbers could be a warning sign of a problem I agree that makes sense. I don't agree with any number having any value on its own though. Whether someone drinks 6 drinks in a week or 30 drinks in a week, I don't think that necessarily means they have a problem assuming the other 5 things are all in good order. I know several people my age that will drink about 12-15 beers on a Saturday (during football season), 4 or 5 on a Friday night, 4 or 5 on Sunday, and maybe 3-4 during the week. Hell that's 25-30 beers in a week which any checklist would indicate is a major red flag but ultimately it's really not in the case of the people I'm talking about.
