This is true of long-term alcoholics, who eventually lose enough liver/kidney function or something - to the point that a beer or two will put them on their arse. Seen it firsthand

It's usually end stage. Your liver can no longer process it like it once could. I've been there, and it sucks.

This also happens with some drugs which causes overdoses at levels someone might have once been comfortable with.

I have never woken up in the morning after not drinking and thought, "wow, I wish I would have drank last night. Dammit, should gotten hammered."

Very sorry to hear that. Seems like maybe he didnt die from alcoholism but died from severe depression that was coped with by alcohol. He obviously was an alcoholic, but that was very likely due to other circumstances in life

Yeah for me it was not being able to stop even when I knew I was losing everything. That was the first time. Got worse to the point I’d leave work early to drink or drink at work. Completely took over my life. Now I don’t drink at all and it doesn’t bother me at all everyone is drinking around me. I’m not a “drinking is bad” guy it’s just not for me.

've always wondered about those checklists. I drink about 6 or 7 alcoholic beverages on a Friday night... Usually gin & tonic or vodka soda. About the same on Saturday night. Some Sundays I'll have 5 or 6 beers or nothing at all. Depends on how I feel from the night before. Can go all work week without drinking anything or may have a beer or two throughout the week, although I usually don't drink during the week.

Its called binge drinking. Like the OP says. Doesnt matter the actual number or amount of days you drink. Weekend drinkers can be alcoholics too.

This is def what I was battling with and my excuse was always, well i dont drink during the week so im not an alcoholic. So wrong.

and the alcoholics that came in were in worse shape than just about everyone else.

Alcoholism will absolutely wreck your body.

Both are absolutely true. I suffered from alcoholism withdrawals and I don’t think words can describe ho horrible they are. I heard things that weren’t there, saw things that weren’t there, couldn’t stop shaking and clenching and sweating. Absolute Hell. Unlike most drugs, alcohol affects every single cell in your body so when you have the withdrawals, your whole body is withdrawing. It’s bad. When I was in treatment you could tell the ‘true’ alcoholics instantly. It’s a tough disease to beat once it gets to that stage you absolutely cannot do it on your own. If you know someone at that stage, they’re close to death, one way or another. They probably wish they would just die too. It’s a miserable existence.

That said, crystal meth will really wreck your shite too. It was never my thing, but methheads sometimes can’t really ever recover from the damage they’ve done to their bodies.

The rough thing about alcoholism too is that is so prevalent. When you quit drugs, you can stop hanging around those people and delete your dealers from your phone. I know it’s not quite that simple, but for an alcoholic our drug dealers is at every gas station and it’s cheap. It’s a weddings, Christmas parties, Sunday BBQ’s, you name it. Everywhere you look you see people drinking with seemingly no repercussions and you convince yourself that this time you can do it too. This time will be different.

But it’s not. Ever. And you have to finally accept that it will never ever be different and it’s just not something you can do.

I don't disagree but you have to admit it's a funny excerpt.

This is precisely why I never drink alone. I had a few outings with friends where I went from happy-go-lucky life of the party to beyond depressed sad drunk mode fast when left alone for a while and it has definitely made me think twice about drinking ever since. I basically never have more than 3 drinks in an outing these days, especially since I always have to drive since I live in the middle of nowhere.

The sad thing is I really want a drink, so I keep alcohol at home, but I won’t drink alone so I never touch it. But since I have alcohol at home, I tell myself there’s no reason to buy it when I’m out since bar booze can be really expensive. Which is good since it keeps me from drinking, but I’m unhappy, but that likely has nothing to do with the alcohol, but the alcohol sometimes makes it better, but it also sometimes makes it a whole lot worse.

If I had a relationship status with alcohol, facebook would read “it’s complicated”

I would say this classifies as some form of alcohol dependency if you’re having 25-30 beers a week. It doesnt make your list but I would think that is a form of alcoholism.

I don't know, man.

I get off work at 5. I handle shite around the house until 7. I'll crack open a beer at 7ish. I drink a beer every 45mins to an hour up until I head to bed at 11 or 12...so that's 4-5 beers per night. 4-5 beers over the course of 4-5 hours certainly doesn't lead me to being trashed or heavily buzzed. If I do that 6-7 days a week, that's 24-35 drinks a week without ever getting really 'drunk'.

Poor health choice? Absolutely. Alcoholism? I REALLY don't think it's even close. I've been around alcoholics and their goal is to get completely obliterated, not just catch a slight buzz by sipping on a few cold ones.

So I'm going to play devil's advocate because I'm curious, then why do it? You say you aren't getting buzzed or trashed, then why even drink? Is it habit?
