If you're saying that noticing a rise in those numbers could be a warning sign of a problem I agree that makes sense. I don't agree with any number having any value on its own though. Whether someone drinks 6 drinks in a week or 30 drinks in a week, I don't think that necessarily means they have a problem assuming the other 5 things are all in good order. I know several people my age that will drink about 12-15 beers on a Saturday (during football season), 4 or 5 on a Friday night, 4 or 5 on Sunday, and maybe 3-4 during the week. Hell that's 25-30 beers in a week which any checklist would indicate is a major red flag but ultimately it's really not in the case of the people I'm talking about.
If they keep doing it for long, it will become a problem.

Drinking to the point of mentally blacking out and not remembering what you did, or said when drunk and around people.

Yes thats badically what I'm saying. One thing I've learned from many years meeting drunks is every alcoholic is unique. There is definitely no volume, quantity or frequency of drinking that qualifies someone as an alcoholic.
Just a few examples-
I was drinking well over a fifth of liquor a day. I could no longer go more than a few hours with out drinking.
My buddy rarely ever drank, but when he did he would end up on a binge in new orleans with crack and hookers til he was broke.
Another friend would drink often and always seek IV opiates after a couple beers.
A girl that fricked any and everyone when drunk.
A dude that only drank about 3 glasses of wine and few nights a week. He would go into deep depression and want suicide.
Theres so many examples. Your 5 criteria all essentially fit into half of the 1st step outlined in AA. "Our lives had become unmanageable...." meaning anything in life gets fricked when I drink. Step 1 is also where you decide if you're an alcoholic.
Very astute observation on your part. I like your view.

Just saw your post. Keep fighting! The alcoholic's affliction only wins if you give up!
May I ask what you are doing to not drink? Thats if you do anything at all besides not drink

Current criteria per the DSM-5 can be found here:
Comparison between DSM-4 and 5
It's more closely aligned with WG_Dawg's method as compared to the "X number of drinks" method.
The claims of specific numbers of drinks causing problems I think comes more from the medical field (increased chance of liver/kidney dysfunction) and not the psychological field (development of alcohol dependency). People just confuse the two when posting random crap and making survets.

Have you ever wondered if you were a frog? If you are wondering if you are one, you probably are one.
Try some controlled drinking like just a drink or two, if you can't quit after a drink or two, find a meeting somewhere. I did, best thing I have ever done for myself. Wish you the best.

I started drinking at the beginning of OP thread and it was so long that I can no longer read this manifesto.

I attend meetings when I can. Living in a rural area makes it tough as I am usually working when they have the meetings.

Damn you’re right behind me. My date is 1/1/06.
To the OP, those are all excellent points with the physical aspect of alcoholism in regards to alcohol itself.
But there is a whole other side to it, which is the spiritual part. This isn’t where I lecture about going to church or anything. I’m talking about the fricking black cloud that hung over me and the fear I lived in from as early as I can remember. Not only did I wreck myself, but I was a tornado whirling around and wrecking others’ lives as well. Talking about the fricked up shite I did: lie, cheat, and steal my way through life, sleeping around with married women and being a male whore, constantly in some sort of drama with those around me, etc. It was always something. I struggled when I first got sober because my life got so simple with no drama.

quote:This is the best answer so far. Alcoholism is when your are “allergic to alcohol” combined with the “phenomon of craving” ’ ... you must have both to be a real alcoholic.
Loss of control over: The amount consumed, and When consumed. Simple as that....all the other items are symptoms

If you use numerous stores throughout the day/week to purchase alcohol because you don’t want Clerk realizing how much you drink.... You might be a Drunk!

At least you didn’t give one of the stock AA answers. My issue was opioids not booze, and I tried AA. Didn’t work for me and I got clean through force of will. It does help a lot of people though.

Man when i sobered up i didnt go to many meetings. I worked a lot.
Do you have a sponser or any support? I don't mean friends and family. I mean drunks that know what you're going through?

I have never known a person who ate too much sugar to go to jail . . .

I am definitely not one of those who spurt out canned stock AA answers. I'm a big proponent of coming up with your own definition to certain key ideas and principles.
I still go to meetings but not nearly as much and as often as I did say, ten years ago. I mainly do sponsorship and keep in touch with a select group in the fellowship around me.
