I cleaned up my life 20 years ago and I haven’t had a drop since. It hasn’t been an easy road to recovery, if it wasn’t for my wife and family being so supportive during the difficult times, I don’t know where I would be. Probably dead. I still get cravings even after all these years especially around the holidays but I’ve learned how to deal with it but take it from me, its never easy.

When you try to go a week without drinking, and by Tuesday night your crushing beers on your couch.
When you only want to have 2-3 drinks at a party but have 6-7 then pick up a sixer on the way home.
When you drink alone more than in social environments
When you have to call in sick to work because of a hangover.
When you think it’s ok to have a few drinks on your lunch break even tho it’s against company policy.
When you have to ‘run a couple errands’ just to leave the house so you can hammer down a few drinks your family won’t know about.
When you cant go on a 3+ hour road trip without drinking a six pack.
It took me doing all the above several times to realize I had a problem. Luckily I never hurt myself or anyone else. When I think about all the time wasted in my life because of booze it’s disturbing, but I’ve moved on and am better moving forward because of it.

I am alcoholic that is trying to stay sober. It's extremely difficult . Maybe the hardest thing I have ever done. I have gone up to a year and then backslide. I feel a couple of the key things to think about is " do you frequently do or say things you wouldn't normally do or say?" Do you hide or not be honest about how much you have had to drink when asked.

I've always wondered about those checklists. I drink about 6 or 7 alcoholic beverages on a Friday night... Usually gin & tonic or vodka soda.
About the same on Saturday night.
Some Sundays I'll have 5 or 6 beers or nothing at all. Depends on how I feel from the night before.
Can go all work week without drinking anything or may have a beer or two throughout the week, although I usually don't drink during the week.
I will say that I can't go out on a weekend and have 2 or 3 drinks. I can say I will and have every intention of doing so, but once I start, I do find it difficult to stop. My judgement does suffer.
I've never missed work due to drinking, my relationships are fine. Never been arrested, or in trouble with the law.
I live in TX now and I'm sure many here think I drink too much. I'm a New Orleanian though and I actually drink less than most everyone I know back home. Drinking is definitely much more socially acceptable in La

Alcoholism will absolutely wreck your body.
that’s because ethanol is toxic and inebriation is the effect of alcohol toxicity in the human body. but, of course, alcohol use is promoted and users of non toxic inebriants are jailed
Makes perfect sense

They're pretty mainstream now. They're selling them at Costco across from the liquor section.

I feel like there are people who abuse alcohol, and there are alcoholics. If you're not physically dependent, then I don't feel like you are an alcoholic. Not that abusing alcohol is a good thing, but there is a difference between abusing alcohol and being dependent upon it.

Define drink in that scenario.

The only one I can check off is the first, but my wife doesn't like being around me whether I am drinking or not.

Drinking alone at home just to drink isnt a good sign imo.
Growing up my mother always told me to stay clear of women that feed negative behaviors. Each time I watch Tombstone doc holidays chick is what I imagine my mom warned me about. So gfs/wives have their part in it just as much.
As my dad told me when I turned 21 "Son, I cant punish you anymore for breaking the law, and drinking anymore. All I can tell you is that it's important you control alcohol, and dont let it control you. Love you.". And no we werent "hidden" from alcohol, but my dad didnt let us be lushes about it or out of control. We also didnt see him sitting on the couch knocking out a sixer either. He mostly drank in social settings or maybe a beer/wine at a restaurant while waiting for our food.
Kids learn from their parents, and thats something we as adults need to be conscious about. another example...dad wasnt hesitant to lift his hand to whack us kids, but I never ever saw his hand flinch when he was mad at my mother. He made it clear that there was a difference between us kids, and my mother. One thing I know I will never be legit accused of is hitting a female abusively as it never crosses my mind in an argument. Now I have been hit by many gfs.

Which is worse; refined sugar or alcohol?

A friend of mine is in liver failure right now. I'd say that's a pretty good sign.

when you think about your next drink.
That basically sums it up right there.
If you are at work, and you are thinking about getting off and getting that drink --- your fricked.
PS - My old man use to need to stop at the bar to get a drink.....before he could get home and ......make a drink.

Got kicked out. Didn't belong there.

If you're saying that noticing a rise in those numbers could be a warning sign of a problem I agree that makes sense. I don't agree with any number having any value on its own though. Whether someone drinks 6 drinks in a week or 30 drinks in a week, I don't think that necessarily means they have a problem assuming the other 5 things are all in good order. I know several people my age that will drink about 12-15 beers on a Saturday (during football season), 4 or 5 on a Friday night, 4 or 5 on Sunday, and maybe 3-4 during the week. Hell that's 25-30 beers in a week which any checklist would indicate is a major red flag but ultimately it's really not in the case of the people I'm talking about.
I would say this classifies as some form of alcohol dependency if you’re having 25-30 beers a week. It doesnt make your list but I would think that is a form of alcoholism.
