That's how it's been explained to me. It's poison and like some other poisons, gives you a good feeling on the way to killing you. Supposedly there is euphoria just before you freeze to death, too.

It's crazy what we'll do to ourselves to feel good.

This is definitely me, but now only on weekends and holidays. And it's not like I'm drinking a case of beer. It's usually me telling wise I'll have 2 or 3 drinks max, but it always turns into more, as the drunker I get, the more I drink.

I don't think it's a problem. It's not like it causes issues other than being hungover the next day.

Because the society we live in does just about anything to keep you restless and dissatisfied. Marketing psychology to keep you spending that paycheck. We live in a broken society and people wonder why there is rampant drug/alcohol abuse, suicide and depression. The system is set up to frick you over. Unless you are at the top of the food chain.

Society only has the control over you that you give it. We are not made to do anything.

Friend of my brother is a recovering alcoholic, he would go from sober to flat out bombed in an instant, it was weird...

There is a weird reverse tolerance for some alkies, my friend who used to have a very high tolerance eventually got to a point where one shot and he was drunk. He has been alcohol free over ten years now. He was a classic alkie who was drinking at work etc. my relationship with him and watching his downfall up close is why I will never touch liqour. Beer only and occasional wine at a special function.

Eta- i will drink liquor but only at 30,000 ft.

I spoke to someone in the program and the conversation went like this.

Him: Can you stop after one drink?
Me: What’s The point of having just one drink?
Him: Then you are probably an alcoholic

I was told once by a Desert Storm vet that during the Clinton yrs you were considered an alcoholic if you drank one beer on your bday every year, and thats it. The consistent nature was what they based it on. Part of the way of leaning out the military. Not looking to argue it, but just what I was told by the guy.

I'm very much the same. I will always love and believe in AA for the personal transformation it gave me. There was a time that I only gave AA answers. Fortunately over the years I've come to realize theres so much more that goes into life and recovery. I'm completely open now but still have a foundation in the 12 steps

I just read this whole thread, and not a single mention of actual alcoholism being genetic. I dont think it is, but found it interesting. Now traits that alcohol can snap on to is a different story, but not actual addiction to alcohol.

Now if your mom only drank alcohol while pregnant is different as thats not genetic.

But the catch is, one has to be honest with his self-appraisal and alcoholics are far from honest. Self cannot see self. Others’ opinions are vital.

Alcoholics are masters at rationalizing/defining their and other's drinking in whatever manner it requires to make it not a problem, if fact there is some of that happening in this thread.

There is a difference in being an alcoholic and having problems as a result of drinking alcohol.

A true alcoholic can NEVER consume alcohol.

So I guess we should go back to just calling them "drunks".

A couple of months ago my wife said something to me that made me stop and think. We had been to happy hour at a Mexican place and I had two margaritas. Not my usual choice in drink. Then we went to a few stores, had all three kids with us, and a couple hours later we get home. We were putting stuff away from the grocery store and I cracked a beer. She immediately questioned me and asked why I needed a beer after having two drinks earlier. I told her I just liked beer. Then she asked me if I had a problem.

What I thought about was, where did I go wrong? I knew I should have poured it in a glass first.
