I guess the Cubans have the same argument as SC in regards to Guantanimo Bay. Ole Fidel would have been perfectly justified in shelling the marines stationed there.

actually, yes. very good comparison.

and just like the North did leading to Civil War, the US would fight back.

only real difference is that the South was prepared for an all out war with the North. that war was going to happen one way or another.

Cuba did (does) not want a war with the US bad enough to justify hostilely taking Gitmo.

With that said, I'll leave you with this: Abraham Lincoln once said, "If you are racist, I will attack you with the north".

Lincoln was a racist. You do know that right?

They weren't! The South controlled major cash crops and the mouth Mississippi river. There was no way the north would let us shut off traffic to the river and they needed our crops, taxes etc.

Lincoln also said "If I can unify the country and free all the slaves I will do it. If I can unify the country and free some of the slaves I will do it. If I can unify the country and free none of the slaves I will do it."

Then he got his arse kicked a couple years and changed his mind to get European support.

You're correct in regards to the MS river. the USA would have been fools to allow it to be controlled by another nation.

Southern "crops" were mostly tobacco and cotton. Most food commdities of the day were grown on Northern farms. While prices would have gone up, a Northern embargo of Southern tobacco and cotton would have been ruinous to the South. Prices/trade would have been negotiated and settled with little effect on the North

Taxes, the South was a net negative in terms of taxes collected vs taxes received. It still is today. The North would have actually benefitted from from secession in this regard.

Starved? I guess you think they were all constantly beat as well.

Let me ask you something. Say you had a plow mule, you paid a good bit for him and you relied on him for your main means of income. Are you going to starve and beat your mule?

Quit relying on Roots to learn your history.

Yes beatings and bad treatment of slaves existed but it was no where near the norm.

I agree, Sherman was a dick and a bit of a nut. However he was considered to be one of the first, if not the first modern military commanders.

What???? Yes they were. What, are you trying to say they were fighting for "state's rights"? The "states rights" idea is completely wrong. The states rights argument is centered around the state's right to choose to have slavery. The states didn't want to give up slavery for economic reasons (plantation labor) and because they felt they were racially superior to slaves. Many plantations couldn't afford to pay workers to perform the work needed to harvest the product and maintain anywhere near the same profit level. GTFO with the idea they weren't fighting for slavery. idk what your teachers were teaching you... and I was educated in the south... smh

And if the North was fighting the moral cause to abolish slavery then why did slavery continue to be practiced in the North well into the civil war?

It was a strategic decision. A very well thought out decision IMO.

You knew the North would eventually prevail so why expand the war by alienating border states. Just wait until the war was over in its entirety and end slavery in one swoop.

What the frick is “Roots”?

Also, I didn’t say they were all starved. But your comment suggests slaves were treated fairly/nice. Replying to your notion that they were all well fed and happy is asinine. Just like a mule, when a slave dies, you get another one.

All you fools with this idea that slaves were treated fair, fed well, given proper care, the south didn’t care about slavery, the war wasn’t about slavery, etc are fooling yourself. Yes, they relied on slaves for their income, but when they died, they went and purchased another one, the same as you purchase a mule. They were not treated as a prized commodity.

Very good comparison.

The federal government owned the land and buildings of Fort Sumter.

The federal government only leases the land of Naval Station Guantánamo Bay.

Nevertheless, the result would be the same if the neighbors started shelling. They'd get their arse kicked.

Saying the South was fighting to keep slavery =/= the North was fighting to abolish slavery

The South seceded because of slavery. There is no real question there.

The North fought the war to preserve the Union. Many in the North supported the war to abolish slavery.
