I'm not shaming anyone. I simply feel it is absurd to glorify the efforts of the CSA by spinning the civil war into a modern context.

But don't bat an eye at judging mid 19th century men, governments, beliefs, and institutions through the prism of an "enlightened" post-modernism. Reasonable discussion is hardly possible.

The quotes the OP posted and the subsequent quote from Lee posted by someone else have much to recommend them as a starting point for a rational discussion. Particularly if we want to admit that much of the ever expanding Federal overreach taken for granted today and eroding our individual liberties finds its foundations in the consolidation of power assumed by the Federal government after the Civil War at the expense of the individual States.

The ill feelings from this still linger. My family lost everything to carpetbaggers.

Yes it does... I remember growing up being born and raised in the South.... but for some yokels, if your great whatever granddaddy didn't fight in the Civil War for the Confederates, then you wusn't a true southerner and they basically treated you like an outsider.

These types of southerners have a lot in common with Midwesterners as far as values with the main exception being they think their sh*t doesn't stink and that everyone outside of their clan is out to get them.

Its ironic to me that those who cling to the whole carpetbaggers are to blame for my current lot in life are no different from black people who say that they need reparations for past injustices.

Some things are better left dead... this thread is one of them.

EDIT:Cump - I was not insinuating that you think carpetbaggers ruined your lot in life... just that I have come across some with that attitude.

Nobody is saying carpetbaggers need to pay reparations.

No... but some people have the mindset that non "true" southerners walking around today owe them something or have wronged them somehow... which is no different than a black person walking around crying about the past from 100 years ago.

If Ben Carson can go from the ghetto to a brain surgeon, I am pretty sure most people who cry about previous generations victimizing them can improve their lot in life.

Because like most idiots on this board, I want to share my snowflake of a viewpoint.

Taxes, the South was a net negative in terms of taxes collected vs taxes received. It still is today.

You was doing great until this part.

Well I standby my statement that the North really didn’t give a rip about the lost taxes. There was certainly more at stake than what the South may have contributed.
