It's got a little more time and looks as strong as it has all day right now.
It’s about to start hitting much more shallow water. Any chance that at least halts the strengthening?

Thanks, I thought it might get to Cat 5. Devastation is going to be unbelievable as is but it can only get worse the stronger it gets.

The majority of tornado warnings don't have an actual tornado. They issue them because the radar shows it might be one.
This. And I can't believe people don't know this.

It certainly can.

I will say one thing, I would not want to be a meteorologist at a NWS during this. Hunting rotation on radar to find a potential spin up would drive me crazy. Gotta have some experience to do it, I'm sure, not like watching a line for a hook or just scanning velocities.

Like many of most intense #hurricanes we have watched on GOES-16 GLM, #Laura's eyewall has been very electrically active this afternoon with lighting bursts ongoing in both east & west quadrents simultaneously rotating around the eye.
A very intense & dangerous tropical cyclone.

More counties added to the tropical storm warning over southwest Arkansas

Laura must be Karen's mother in law

Picking out tropical tornadoes is hard AF.

I think "halts the strengthening" is the best way you could have put it. The speed Laura is moving won't allow it to weaken much, but between what shear is there and the shallower water (though it is plenty warm) may just keep it from RI as it makes landfall.

Not sure if shallow water does anything
I just saw a report of 42 foot waves in the gulf. Not a record but mighty impressive

Thanks, Duke. I remember my Buddy who is a big deep sea fisherman talking about the water depths. He would rather haul his boat the Venice. You have to go 100 miles out of Cameron to get into deep water.

Just because I was curious, I tracked the NOAA Recon Plane en route (NOAA2). It left Tampa and is currently about 350 miles away from Laura and traveling at 320mph ground speed. So we should be seeing the next real data coming in around 6pm CST.

I would not want to do it. It is almost an unwinnable scenario. With delay in radar and low storms and little TVS, nope. I don't envy them in that regard.
