Think of it as Laura is working her way around the high pressure ridge and is looking for a weakness that will allow it to turn north. That trough in Texas is the weakness that will allow Laura to turn north and continue riding the ridge.

I was reading the Hurricane Rita storm report earlier today and was surprised that the highest measured sustained wind was 82 knots (94 mph) and highest gust was 116 knots (133 mph). However, many instruments failed due to surge or other reasons.
If Laura really gets to 115 or higher sustained winds and is moving inland faster than Rita did, the inland wind speeds could be higher.
I wouldn't be too concerned if your trees are away from falling on your house. You may lose shingles and siding, but a well-built home that far inland should be okay barring an unforeseen tornado.

You could see the Houston hype coming a mile away (it may still impact there directly). Once New Orleans was off the table, Houston was the next big player for clicks.
Unsurprisingly, Laura and the NHC don't really care about clicks.
