Duke, what’s with this ridge of drier air it look like is in mid Texas. Is that going to steer this or affect it at all? I saw it on the water vapor image on NOAA.

Assuming the current forecast comes close to reality, wind damage and power outages will be worse but surge will be quite a bit less.
Overall the coastal damage may be less but in some areas both near the coast and inland the wind/tree/poorly built home damage will be worse.
Can you explain why you say that? I've been digging into what it was like in Houston for Rita as I figured that would be a pretty good comparison if the path holds.
My area saw 60-70mph winds during Rita (can't recall if gusts or sustained.) Not really wanting more than that.

Well Rita made landfall as a "weakening" Cat 3. Laura is projecting to be strengthening Cat 3 upon landfall. I would be proceed with caution in saying something like that.
