Report from besieged #Mariupol: "About an hour ago, Russian occupation forces used a poisonous substance of unknown origin against Ukrainian military and civilians in the city of Mariupol, which was dropped from an enemy UAV."

external Azov: Russia used poisonous substance against Ukrainian troops in Mariupol.
The substance has been distributed by a drone, and its victims have shortness of breath and vestibullocerebellar ataxia, the Azov regiment said on April 11. It may be Russia’s first known use of chemical weapons in Ukraine.

As predicted - Russians not so positive about the war anymore now that the bodies start coming home

This will be the thing that changes the trajectory of this war. Still no troops on the ground but plenty of materials to swing the balance. My guy in Russia says there’s word of casualties in the 10s of thousands. Also the Czechs say the convoy is being carefully picked at for prizes. That intelligence is being very very selective in which pieces are being selected for removal.

I've been struck over the past few months at how multi-ethnic the Russian military is, and seeing those pictures just reinforces those impressions.
Given that ethnic Russians gave up on having children in anything close to replacement numbers about forty years ago, I guess it shouldn't surprise me, but it is a bit odd at seeing so many Tatars and Kazakhs and Uzbeks and Chechens and Siberians and so on. Shoigu himself is Tuvan.

Probably a feature not a bug. Kill off the high birthrate minority groups while keeping the ethnic Russians safe

I am not sure it's intentional so much as it's the natural outcome of ethnic Russians avoiding military service given 1) the poor quality of life the average Russian serviceman has, 2) ethnic Russians having other, better-paying options, and 3) ethnic Russians tending to be more urban. If you're a second generation Uzbek peasant in Russia, life in the Russian military is probably a better lot in life than 90% of your other options; the same can't necessarily be said for the Muscovite upper-middle classes.

They have conscription, but much like our previous draft during Vietnam, I'm sure it's rather easy to get out of if you have the right connections or money.
So naturally you'd have more ethnic minorities and poor Russians in the military.

If this gets confirmed somehow and after the Russians claim they don't have any poisonous gas and then claim it's a false flag, I truly wonder what the West response will be. I don't think more sanctions would suffice. I mean we responded with missile strikes when Syria did this, but would that even be on the table in Ukraine.
Also curious why Russia wouldn't go for something more lethal if they are going to pull this card out?
If it can be confirmed with irrefutable evidence (incredibly unlikely), I wonder if China/India would change their tune at all.

I think that's right. They also have lower birth rate for ethnic Russians. In Putin's rah-rah war speech, he was saying "we're all Chechen, all Tatar, etc." (demographics he needs to conscript/enlist).

We’ll make some fiery speeches at the UN and continue to supply Ukraine with all the bullets and intel they can handle. So nothing new.

Shitty or nonexistent chemical gear issued to their own troops. If the wind shifts they dont want to kill them. They may be callous, but they're not that callous.

Putin purges Russian intelligence...unfortunately, that could mean the Russian intel will get better from here out.

A “Stalinist” mass purge of Russian secret intelligence is under way after more than 100 agents were removed from their jobs and the head of the department responsible for Ukraine was sent to prison. In a sign of President Putin’s fury over the failures of the invasion, about 150 Federal Security Bureau (FSB) officers have been dismissed, including some who have been arrested.

The way purges go, the intel is more likely to get worse than better. Those guys got arrested for displeasing Putin. The new guys will care more about avoiding the same fate than providing accurate information.

They making you go through OCS, or are you going to be a direct commission? I'm assuming DC since you're a Doctor.
Direct Commission. Two week Officer Basic Leadership Course and then additional medical training courses that can be performed during monthly drill. Like mass casualty event and deployed field hospital. Have to be prepared for when a whole company comes in complaining of pissing fire after a night out.

It’s possible they could be trying to toe the line, seeing what they can get away with while still avoiding WW3.
It’s also possible that they carefully selected an agent that could have plausibly originated in Ukraine (so that Russia can claim innocence).
That’s assuming there’s any truth to those reports, obviously.

Probably because even the Russians do not have faith in Russian CBRN gear.

How about this…if Le Pen wins the French election, France might withdraw from NATO

Wouldn't be the first time that France withdrew from NATO.
