France is probably the only country that doesn’t really need NATO. They are hands down the most powerful military in Europe and probably the only one that can reliably project power away from its own borders/shores without our help.

On the flip side, losing France would be a pretty big blow to NATO.

NATO will be in a better position if LePen wins even if France leaves NATO. LePen has backed off of her call to leave the EU which means that France would still be in the European single market. LePen wants to be much more aggressive with nuclear energy and is open to reversing France's ban on fracking. Since France has the 2nd largest natural gas reserves in the EU (Poland is #1) it could be huge for weaning the European NATO countries off their addiction to Russian natural gas.

I meant militarily. Frankly I think NATO is outdated even with the current events. All the support going to Ukraine is independent of NATO anyways.

The results of the first round the presidential election are basically the same as 2017 for Macron and Le Pen (high 20s for one and low 20s for the other). Voters in the other parties will coalesce around Macron as the anti-Le Pen candidate.

Is the below discussion really negative?

I am absolutely shocked that a negative post about the PB in this thread is an exaggeration. Absolutely shocked.

Maybe try reading all of discussion versus cherry picking posts. Below is from first page alone.
quote:

Russia better crack open a history book. Finland whipped that arse in WWII

Lol at Russian fail- bluster.

Yep.

The term “Molotov cocktail” was coined by the Finns fricking up Russians.

quote:
“Russia better crack open a history book. Finland whipped that arse in WWII”

Not exactly how it ended but Finns did win the kill ratio by leaps and bounds.

That’s certainly a Putin- centric way of explaining away Finnish sovereignty. Alas, Putin’s ambitions surpass his capabilities and he is weakening Russia while strengthening The West. His vision of Russia imposing its will on his neighbors doesn’t jibe with reality. This is more his Waterloo than him taking a lap while riding shirtless on top of a grizzly bear.

That's a pretty bold statement from a country who can't even handle their much smaller, former state.

Russia won’t do anything. The world now sees them for who they really are. Aren’t any better than Iran, India, and Pakistan militarily. All their threats is just talk. Like North Korea.

Russia's mighty military is struggling (if we're to believe what's being fed to us through all the various propaganda outlets) against lowly Ukraine with some modern weapons and critical Anti-A/V technology.
Finland has a high-powered, modern military and a nearly impenetrable border and admirable defensive capabilities.
In a conventional fight, Finland would easily raze Russia.

You mean this one that was started yesterday that did have a few comments/replies about 19th amendment but was mostly talking about politics of this demographic.

Pretty sure I have seen similar sentiments on the OT.

Spent four years in Germany. Grandma is from Germany. Still have tons of family in Germany.

Germany has had a huge change of opinion on the size and purpose of their military.

Germany will arm to challenge Russia. Japan will arm to challenge China.

Oh how the turns have tabled from WWII

Poland has vowed to build Europe's strongest military within the next 5 years. Plus the addition of Sweden and Finland make up for the loss of France.

However LePen is not going to win so it's a pointless argument.

She’s had some interesting changes of heart. She’s pulling the socialist heart strings with the retirement opposition to Macron, but then the opposite with energy tax reduction and French individualism.

If France leaves NATO can Germany take back Alsace–Lorraine just to give my family heritage a little more diversity? I have too much French right now.

A little territorial war isn’t too much to ask for the sake one’s diversity these days is it?

Agree there, but admit you would have better perspective on this than I.
