What is the significance of May 9?

Victory (over the Germans) Day. It is when they have the big annual military parade in Red Square.

So the implication is that Putin is motivated to pull out all of the stops to avoid being mired in a stalemate confrontation on the date they parade the military around Moscow?

I think that is exactly what they want. This covers everything they need and pushes Ukraine and the west back a bit.
Bad thing is if this is what happens the US will be paying billions for years to come in Ukraine.

Oh good lord, now going after another poster. The last lynching by this mob is still hanging from the gallows.
Just post about the war and ignore the posts by people who have differing opinions.

The Urgency of war making for interesting alliances isn't a new concept.

1940

Adolf Hitler: "Blond haired blue-eyed white people are a master race"

Also Hitler: "We've formed an alliance with Japan, where there are no blond haired blue-eyed white people"

Great Britain/USA: "I kinda hate everything about you Stalin, but can we be friends for a few years?"

Having chosen war, Putin doesn’t have a choice but to fight it out and win. I don’t think they’ll settle for anything less than half of Ukraine.

Agreed, way too many people are writing off the Russians way too soon. Clearly the Russian political/military leadership underestimated the Ukrainians, but to simply say that because Russia hasn't conquered the Country in a month means they can't win is an incredibly misinformed opinion.

Russia has time on its side. It is the aggressor with greater resources. Russia can disengage anywhere it wants along the front, reallocate resources, and go on the attack again. It has complete command of Black Sea coast and generally has air superiority. Russian can sit back and spend the next six months concentrating on degrading the ability of the Ukrainian armed forces. Russia does not have to win the war this month or even this year, it simply has to win.

If I were Putin, I would simply push all my chips into the center of the table, by keeping this year's conscripts via stop loss, mobilize another 500,000 to 1,000,000 of Russia's reserves, spend the next 6 months getting them ready to fight, and come the Fall, initiate Operation Bagration Part II and crush the Ukrainians.

Putin has to win, no matter the costs, he as to win.

I think he’s just shite-posting. My opinion, as you put it.

I have a Ukrainian co-worker who believes the Ukrainian soldiers and fighters are so upset now that even Zelensky can’t call them off if there is a settlement of some sort. As much as the Russians won’t stop, the Ukrainians don’t care about a enduring war either

No chance in hell Russia will take 1/2 of Ukraine given the level of support and motivation of the UKA The Russians have much greater resources.

If Ukraine was alone then you would be correct. However, Ukraine is not alone and you are incorrect. NATO with the possible exception of Hungary is united behind Ukraine. That means that Ukraine has access to western weapons and western finances. Slovakia has agreed to let Ukraine use its facilities to repair its tanks and aircraft. I would not be surprised if Poland and Bulgaria don’t follow suit shortly. More importantly Ukraine has western special forces training their military and they have a headstart on mobilization.

If Russia mobilizes for a long war it will have to either train its new troops like the conscript armies and fight with the same doctrine that failed so miserably in the first month of the war, or take the time and spend the money to reorganize and retrain its military to be better at fighting a modern army. If Russia goes with the first option then it’s unlikely that we see different results from what we saw during the first month of the war which is lots of tanks destroyed or captured and poor discipline by conscripts and lots of casualties. If Russia goes with the second option then it will not have the reinforcements necessary to make a major offensive and sustain it in the near future.

The aggressor loses advantage of time, they don't gain it.

Population =/= “greater resources”

Do India, Pakistan, Indonesia, or Nigeria strike conventional military fear in your heart?

Russia is closer to them in many ways than they are to a Denmark or Iceland.

Some of these guys think of war like a game of Risk, moving inanimate pieces of known quantity around a table while completely discounting less glamorous aspects like logistics, morale, training, and retention. Read the earlier post where the guy said he would "simply" mobilize a million men if he were Putin, for a great example.
