Can anyone tell me why Russia would want Chernobyl? it isn't a functioning place.

He's got 60%of his ground forces fully engaged in Ukraine and has yet to meet any of his strategic objectives against a much smaller opponent. Every hour this drags on, every video of shot down helicopters, burning tanks and Russian prisoners exposes Putin as a paper tiger. And the insurgency hasn't even started yet. He may take parts of Ukraine, but he won't hold it, and he won't take the Baltics.

A strongman capturing a radioactive place for unknown purposes amid a campaign for continent domination? What could go wrong?

Even the Russians love their 80’s nostalgia

I saw it was more about the access to the River in the area than Chernobyl itself. I had the same thought, but also given the security/isolation of the area presumably there could be things there of value that we don’t know of.

That’s pretty hopeful for less than 24 hours of an invasion

Right? It took us like 2 weeks to reach Baghdad against the vaunted Iraqi army
Posted on 2/24/22 at 2:25 pm to JohnnyKilroy
He was posting last night about that.

This is all it is. They invaded Ukraine via Belarus and Chernobyl is quite literally on the road to the Ukrainian capital.

I'll see if I can find the article, but last week I read a short interview with a former Ukrainian military officer who currently resides around Kyiv, and he described the mentality of Ukrainians possibly fighting Russians.
Basically, he approached it as "Russians are like our brothers, and brothers don't fear fighting each other like they would with a total stranger."
I thought that was kind of badass. Many Ukrainian insurgents are probably watching Russia roll in with their better equipment and bigger numbers, but they're looking at the guys holding those weapons as their equals that they're very familiar with, and therefore aren't intimidated by them.
