The problem wasn't our ability or even our political will to defeat the NVA. It was the fact that the government in power in Saigon was just as fricked up, corrupt, and ineffective as the one in Hanoi. The country got what it wanted. Or at least what it deserved. It's doing fine now. And the Vietnamese absolutely hate China. So they're a strong potential ally in the future.

Vietnam effectively had no leader... the Emperor couldn't stand the place and wanted to be in Europe. We also didn't get that... the Vietnamese themselves mostly did not think they had anything to fight for... my father-in-law talks about how the locals would swarm the base garbage dump to go through the fresh garbage from the mess hall when he was there, which made him think there was a bigger problem in the country than the North Vietnamese.

But yeah... at some conference where some US military guys from back then and some Vietnamese guys were on a panel to look back on it, the US guys talked about this and that if this had happened and that had happened... the Vietnamese guys said "You don't get it... you never got it. We weren't trying to be part of the USSR or China... we wanted a Vietnam run by the Vietnamese. That was the entire point... not an Emperor who wanted to be part of France... just Vietnam run by the Vietnamese."

Look at the Taiwan situation. China says it’s theirs. Until they can take it back does it matter? Maybe some pointy heads might say it does but who cares?

Taiwan and Crimea are nearly night and day examples.

If China controls Taiwan, there isn't any other territory where Taiwanese leadership will go and claim the land from. There also isn't anyone in the area who would or could put up any kind of meaningful resistance.

Crimea's location and it being connected to the greater Ukraine territory completely changes the context. Also, Russia has controlled it for a decade and the international community still doesn't recognize it.

It would be a huge coup for Russia to get official recognition.

Donald Trump said Friday he would "probably" meet Ukrainian President Zelensky next week for the first time since returning to office, as the US leader pushes for an end to the conflict with Russia.

"I will probably be meeting with President Zelensky next week," Trump said. Asked if such a meeting would be in Washington, Trump replied it "could be Washington -- well, I'm not going there" to Kyiv.

It would be awesome to see AF1 being escorted by F22s fly over St. Michael's golden domes after Biden had to sneak into Kyiv on a blacked out train. Obviously we would give Russia a heads up just like we did when Biden went and I am 99.9999% sure that Putin would not be stupid enough to attack while Trump was in country. However, it is the smart move and the right move by making Zelensky come to Washington. However, it would be a damn ballsy move by Trump and it would give the country a good 35 seconds of silence from the democrats.

The official recognition on the international level probably won't and can't happen... it legitimizes taking territory by force,,,

Taiwan has always been an obsession with the CCP because that's where the elite class fled when China fell to them... so the fear a popular movement to return those people to power on one hand.

But Taiwan is much more complicated than Crimea. The Republic of China took control of the island over when the Japenese lost it at the end of WWII, and... were pretty damned oppressive to the Taiwanese population ("meet the new boss, same as the old boss"), especially when they fled to the Island to escape the CCP. It is another case of wealthy, powerful elite minority rolling in and taking control of a population and declaring martial law. The identity of the island that was enforced on the population was that they were Chinese, just in exile. The present Taiwanese identity we think of happened in the 80s and 90s when things opened up enough for there to actually be travel between the two countries, and the exiled ROC people saw that the China they knew was pretty much gone forever, and they started to think of themselves as "Taiwanese." This all according to the Taiwanese American wife of a buddy, whose family were ROC exiles (and whose older family members still often talk of retaking control of China, apparently).

The other reason China has again become obsessed with claiming Taiwan is their quest to control the South China Sea and Pacific shipping routes to then control the competition from South Korea, Japan, Vietnam, Indonesia, The Philippines... as the US Navy withdraws from being "the world's Coast Guard" they want to project Naval power and intimidate, if not outright physically disrupt, cargo shipping from competitors.

That will not weather well, natural gas is still cheaper than this time in 2022, a lot cheaper today. by approx. $10

Now go play, moron.

Just so you understand, on February 7, 2022 natural gas closed at $26.73 at the TTF trading hub for Europe.

US now flying manned surveillance aircraft in the Black Sea, RC-135. Biden had stopped any manned aircraft flying surveillance there.

Chicken is apparently fine with this simply turning into a twitter feed for Lord Bebo, ayden, RWA, and Geroman. Which, if I wanted to follow those Russian propagandists, ... I could just follow them on Twitter. This is no longer a thread about the war; it's just a feed of straight propaganda from Putin.

I started coming here to understand the war better and discuss it. Practically no one in here knows that Ukraine has executed a successful small counteroffensive in Kursk in the past few days, and that Russians who had been optimistic about soon completing the reconquest of Kursk are now very upset.

It's just harder and harder to justify time spent here.

"Here is an outline of the Russian encirclement around the large fortification network west of Dachne.

The yellow box is the area being held to the end by the AFU. you can see how there is only one route in and out and a river crossing must be made. The road is cover by Russian drones, mines and artillery. The yellow X will be the video posted in the thread, it was posted today and Geolocated to that area."

What happened with the North Korean Soldiers? Just a week ago you and NAFO claimed they were all killed on the front lines. Today, Zelensky said they are back. Is this like the Ghost of Kyiv?
