"Friendly fire" by Ukrainian air defence among lines of inquiry into F-16 fighter jet crash – Voice of America

OLEKSANDR SHUMILIN — Thursday, 29 August 2024, 21:33

Ukraine's military command is considering different lines of inquiry into the F-16 fighter jet crash, including pilot error and friendly fire from Ukrainian air defences.

Source: Ukrainian Service of the Voice of America, citing an unnamed representative of the Ukrainian Air Force

Details: Speaking on condition of anonymity, the official said that various lines of inquiry are being considered, including "friendly fire" from Ukrainian air defences, a technical malfunction and pilot error.

"But the exact reasons will be known only after the completion of the investigation," he said.

Earlier, an official statement from the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine said that during an air fight, "communication was lost" with an F-16 aircraft while it was approaching the next target.

"As it turned out later, the plane had crashed, and the pilot was killed," the General Staff said in a statement.

The same statement said that a special Defence Ministry commission has been appointed to investigate the causes of the crash, and is working at the site of the crash.

Sucks because they only had 6 planes and 10 pilots to start with.

Im a fan of not sending billions of dollars and unnecessarily risking nuclear war for a country that doesn’t and will never matter to American interests. So if that’s how Jake Sullivan feels he’s right about at least one thing

Actually GOP brings more to this thread than anybody. He is on top of the news no matter if it’s good or bad.

Really? Please find me the quote where I've claimed to be any kind of expert on the war in Ukraine.

You actually haven't been around here that long, but when I first started posting in this thread, I was really ignorant about a lot of weapons systems, etc. The whole reason that I post here instead of on Twitter or somewhere else is so that I can get my dumb takes corrected anonymously and without embarrassment. I'm here to learn. To me, the conflict in Ukraine (while obviously horrific.in so many ways) is a fascinating glimpse into the future.

But if you think my takes are bad here, you should find the original COVID thread from 2020 and see how much worse my takes were there. But again, my motives were similar: to try to understand a unique phenomenon.

The only times in here that I've claimed to be an expert were on questions of US politics, because I worked full-time in politics for 10 years, and my takes on those topics have largely been correct. I insisted, when many doubted, that the supplemental would eventually pass. I said that Speaker Johnson would eventually support it, etc.

One wonders what kind of back door understanding the US has with Russia to prohibit Ukraine using long range weapons.
This communication is greatly underrated in the media. You know the US State Dept and the Kremlin are talking regularly, if not daily.

Washington is certainly getting quid pro quo, it's just not visible yet. On this level, the primary goal of the US is to locate and prepare to take control of the Russian nuclear weapons. This may be getting far ahead of the current events, but the story of how the Warsaw Block nuclear weapons were handled when the Soviet Union fell has never been appreciated. Like it or not, other than preventing a NATO-Russian war breaking out, a repeat of this effort is the primary US goal right now.

thank you. I've said that over and over... and again just yesterday

IF they lose it no doubt it will hurt. Lots of chatter about how the Russians are leery of a trap.

Over the past 24 hours, the enemy advanced 1 km² and took control of the following settlements:
- Nechayev;
- Nizhnyaya Parovaya.

Capturing these settlements is part of a Ukrainian effort to even out the northern part of the front in Kursk.

INTELLIGENCE UPDATE
UPDATE ON UKRAINE 30 August 2024

On 24 August 2024, the Russian Kursk Oblast Administration announced the creation of the BARS-Kursk volunteer unit. Prospective recruits are promised that they will serve only within the Kursk Oblast in Russia on a six-month contract.

BARS (Combat Army Reserve of the Country) units were first established in 2021, initially intended to provide the Russian MOD with a cadre of active reservists with a high level of readiness and training. Since March 2022, volunteers have been able to join BARS units for short-term service. BARS units are predominantly light infantry formations which lack integrated artillery or armoured vehicles. There are now over 30 BARS units across Russia.

The creation of the BARS-Kursk volunteer unit is almost certainly a Russian response to the Ukrainian incursion into the Russian Kursk Oblast, which began on 6 August 2024. It is unlikely that the volunteer unit will be set up and able to support any Russian military activity in Kursk over the next month. Although it is likely attempting to build its forces in Kursk, Russia is currently prioritising the Pokrovsk axis in eastern Ukraine.

If that's your definition of "mattering to American interests" then almost every country in the world matters. And if everything is important, nothing is.

If Russia took complete control of Ukraine tomorrow the only thing about that that could possibly change the life of an average American citizen is if we decided to go to war to try and liberate it.

I shouldn't have lumped you in with the lot of grifters, you're in general a pretty good poster and fairly well informed. We just disagree fairly often.

I'd say of the Ukraine-first crowd you are consistently the least wrong
