Ukraine in control of 28 settlements in Kursk Oblast, Russian official says

by The Kyiv Independent news desk August 12, 2024 4:24 PM

Ukraine is in control of 28 settlements in Kursk Oblast, one week after launching a surprise attack into Russian territory, regional authorities said on Aug. 12.

Speaking at a meeting to discuss the ongoing situation in the region, Alexey Smirnov, the acting governor of Kursk Oblast, described it as "difficult."

"Today, 28 settlements are under enemy control," he added, in comments reported by Russian state media.

Smirnov's statement is the first official comment from either side on the status of territorial control in the region.

Earlier on Aug. 12, Smirnov said those living in the Belovsky district located on the border with Ukraine were being advised to leave.

"I instructed the regional Ministry of Transport to prepare additional transport; buses are already on duty in safe areas," he said.

"The main thing now is to promptly notify residents of populated areas about the opportunity to leave the area."

Ukrainian sabotage and reconnaissance groups reportedly entered the territory of the Belovsky district overnight on Aug. 11.

According to head of the district, Nikolai Volobuev, the group's appearance created "a lot of panic" in the Belovsky district.

He described the current situation as "stable, but very tense."

A few hours before the evacuation in Belovsky district was announced, Belgorod Oblast Governor Viacheslav Gladkov said residents of the neighboring Krasnoyaruzhsky District would be evacuated due to reported activity of the Ukrainian army in the area.

The Russian state-controlled media outlet TASS reported on Aug. 10 that over 76,000 residents of Kursk Oblast had been evacuated due to the ongoing fighting.

I wonder whether the Ukrainians will return the favor and plunder what is left behind. Probably not.

It only looks that way to ignorant people. Lukashenko already gave Putin almost all his tanks and ammo. The Belarusian army couldn't actually fight for more than a few days.

Poland probably is going to have something to say about this.

The next month or so feels really meaningful in terms of the ultimate result of the conflict.

I'm hoping this is a genuine sign of strength for Ukraine and not one of an army in decline pushing their chips in as a last gasp.

In either case I don't think you do this without the reality being that Russia was slowly wearing you down faster than you were wearing them down just fighting along the front like they had been for months.

IMO, this is out there as an effort to get Ukraine to pull assets back from Kursk to defend Belarusian border

As you have mentioned, Belarus gave most of their armor to Russia. and they have little to no air defense left either. Ukrainian drones would wreck havoc in Belarus

If there's any organic opposition left in Belarus now would be the time for them to do something. Russia is tapped out and couldn't do anything to keep Lukashenko upright.

All of the speculation on this page based on the BTR-4 may be utter rubbish, as it now appears that the Ukrainian BYR-4
discussed above may have been previously captured by Russian forces.

If so, it was Russians driving it through Giri.

I'm hearing now that the captured vehicle is a different vehicle. If so, Ukraine is still making huge gains.

I saw other rumors that they are encroaching upon Kerenovo (at the northwestern edge of the salient) with the goal of enveloping it. That would be extraordinary.

Rumors that 5 new units joined the fight near the Russian bulge in Donbas. Maybe rolling back a farm field at a time was to set a trap. I hope so.

If it is the Russians are going to be pissed that Ukraine continues to not play by Russia rules.

Why can’t they take back the settlements Russia controls in Ukraine?

Capturing 500 sq. km.
LOL

For comparison, that is 80 km^2 than Russia captured in Ukraine in the entire month of June.

I agree with ukraines move though. Capturing undefended Russian villages will help Ukraine with their bargaining power when Trump moves to end the war early next year

New FT article: LINK

Over the next six days, the fear felt by many of the thousands of Ukrainian troops taking part in this audacious operation yielded to exhilaration. They advanced quickly — by 5km-10km a day — seizing several villages, part of a railway line and a key gas transit point. They began hastily digging positions and preparing for Russian reinforcements to arrive.

But to their surprise, Russian troops did not appear, at least not in the manner that they expected. Powerful glide bombs were launched from Russian jets, which wiped out some Ukrainian troops and valuable western-provided equipment. Lancet X-winged suicide drones came barrelling towards them.

But the Ukrainians pressed on. “It was a bit difficult at first but then it got easier,” said Roman, another soldier in Volodymyr’s unit.

On Friday, however, their Stryker was hit by a Russian rocket-propelled grenade. The driver suffered a concussion but everyone survived, thanks to the vehicle’s thick layer of armour.

Unable to drive it further, they towed it back across the border. When the Financial Times met the crew on Sunday, just 5km inside Ukraine, Volodymyr, Roman and two other soldiers were taking the damaged vehicle apart to see what could be used as spare parts for other Strykers before sending it to a US base in Germany for repairs.
