A Russian Mi-8 was shot down in Donetsk. Unsubstantiated rumors that a Ukrainian drone knocked out the helicopter which would make it the 1st helicopter to be shot down by a drone.
LINK
Edit: Appears to be legit as Russian propaganda is even admitting to it. Drone probably caught the helicopter just as it was in it’s hover.

I don't see him posting on weekends. His wife must work a regular 9-5 weekday job.

She gets to stay at home, actually.
Do you post all the time because yours is with her boyfriend?

As far as the contrarians go he’s far from the worst. I’m fine with hearing an isolationist perspective as long as they don’t try to insult my intelligence like the PT pro Russian wing.

An interesting first. Some of those drones are fast. I see the record holder is currently 223 mph. The MI-8 top speed is 140 knots so it looks like quite a few racing drones should be able to catch a MI-8.

It’s possible but i’d put my money on it being in its hover stage simply because that’s when the helicopter is at its most vulnerable. Yea racing drones can go fast but you also have to take into account the explosive payload they are carrying which slows it down and decreases its range also. Still completely possible it hit it in full forward motion but that’s a much more difficult shot as we have seen from the few drones that have tried and missed so far. Hopefully we get some footage to see exactly how this happened. At any case, that’s one less helicopter and more importantly, one less trained crew to fly them.

Taking down an MI-8 does bring hints of what may emerge for drones in the near future. When military motion tracking first came out, it required specially manufactured chips dedicated to that purpose. Now any contemporary cell phone processor can easily do it which means that a visually tagged fire and forget drone could be quite deadly to helicopters or anything on the ground. Soon to be followed by the addition of image recognition.
Of the many aircraft my father flew, he loved helicopters the most.

BREAKING: First F-16 fighter jets arrive in Ukraine, Bloomberg reports
by Kateryna Denisova and The Kyiv Independent news desk July 31, 2024 6:24 PM
Ukraine has received the first batch of fourth-generation U.S.-made F-16 jets, Bloomberg reported on July 31, citing unnamed people familiar with the matter.
The news comes a year after the allied "fighter jet coalition" took shape at the Vilnius NATO summit under the Danish and Dutch leadership.
Kyiv is yet to confirm these reports.

I'm at lunch now after meetings to discuss application of Ukrainian sourced technology beyond anything Silicon Valley has for more efficient extraction of PGM's and Rare Earth Minerals from tailings piles, also for stimulating stripper and marginal oil wells. It has been further developed by a leading Russian physicist who was one of the 7500 who came to the US after the fall of the USSR.
What about you?

Reports today that today Putin doubled the federal signing bonus from 195,000 to 400,000 rubles.
Since all the individual regions have their own quotas, all of them are adding at least another 400,000.
But Lima will be in here in a second to tell us that Russia doesn't have a manpower problem.

It’s been a “secret” that basically everyone has known but I’m glad they are finally coming out with it. The first 6 have planes been in Ukraine for a couple weeks now along with their pilots. What has lagged has been the logistical team and all the spare parts and equipment they need to operate the aircraft. This is another reason why I always thought, and still do, that the Swedish Gripen is the best aircraft for Ukraine eventually. The Gripen only needs one specialized shipping container that can be put on a regular shipping trailer and taken wherever the Gripen lands wether that be an airbase, a highway or some farmer’s field. That is all the tools and special equipment that they would need to do most any repair right there in the field. Unfortunately the F-16 isn’t that lucky and it does have a lot of things that have to follow it into the country. Now that the Ukrainians are letting it slip I get the sense that all said maintenance equipment has reached their airbase as well. What is going to be most interesting now is WHEN Ukraine decides to first deploy the fighters and WHERE it operates out of first. Which airbase has been selected as initial F-16 base because you’re going to see a lot of Russian missiles attempt to hit that area.

See videos of wooden F-16 decoys. You know Russia will be reporting soon that they destroyed an F-16 like they did Abrams. Will it be pure propaganda, decoy, or real….

They won’t get the F-16 there’s only 6 of them and they will be very well protected while not being used. Ukraine will protect these with everything they have if for propaganda use and nothing else.
