Interior Minister: Russian missile attack on Chernihiv kills at least 13, injures over 60, including children
by Kateryna Denisova and The Kyiv Independent news desk April 17, 2024 9:39 AM
Explosions were heard in Chernihiv, located in Ukraine's north, at around 9 a.m. local time, according to Suspline media outlet.
A 25-year-old female police lieutenant is among the killed, said Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko. She was at home on sick leave when a shrapnel fatally wounded her, according to Klymenko.
"This would not have happened if Ukraine had received enough air defense equipment and if the world's determination to counter Russian terror was also sufficient," President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Telegram.
Three Russian missiles hit the area near the city's downtown, according to Chernihiv Oblast Governor Viacheslav Chaus. Civilian and social infrastructure facilities came under attack, Oleksandr Lomako, acting city's mayor, said.
An eight-story building was destroyed in the attack while four high-rise buildings, a hospital, a higher education institution, and dozens of cars were damaged, according to Kuleba.
The number of casualties can increase as the search and rescue operation is ongoing. At least three people are considered missing, according to Klymenko.
"Terrorists can destroy lives only when they first manage to intimidate those who are capable of stopping terror and protecting life. Determination matters. Support matters," added the president.
"Ukrainian determination is enough. There needs to be sufficient commitment from partners and sufficient support to reflect it."
Stocks of air defense in Ukraine are low across the country as U.S. military aid funding for Ukraine continues to be held up in Congress. In the meantime, Russia has stepped up targeted attacks on Ukraine's energy infrastructure, overwhelming local air defenses and destroying some of Ukraine's largest coal-fired power stations.

Russian troops begin to abandon Kharabaj, marking the end of the humanitarian operation that began in 2020. During the three years, the complete fall of the region under the control of the Azeri authorities was avoided. However, this only delayed the inevitable. Now Azerbaijan, having regained full control of sovereignty over its territory, looks to the west in search of initiating an irredentist process over Armenia that will allow it to unite its territory of Nakhichevan and therefore connect Baku with Ankara by land. One war ended and another could begin in the near future

Due to the cooling and cloudy weather, electricity consumption is rapidly increasing, — "Ukrenergo".
This morning its level is 6.5% higher than yesterday.
"In order to cover such growth, it is necessary to additionally include 3-4 units at thermal power plants. But now there is no such possibility - thermal power plants are one of the main targets of russian missile strikes," the company explained.

?????????? Regarding the missile strike on Dzhankoi
Last night, the AFU launched an attack on the airfield in Dzhankoi. Around 12 ATACMS operational-tactical missiles were utilized for the strike, likely originating from the Kherson region.
?? The assault was executed in two phases. The initial strike involved seven missiles, seemingly equipped with cluster warheads, while the second wave deployed at least five. Some equipment at the airfield sustained damage, along with one of the buildings.
?? The attack could have employed both MGM-140A with a range of up to 165 km and MGM-140B with a combat radius of 300 km. By launching from the outskirts of Kherson, the AFU can easily reach Dzhankoi, even with the initial versions of ATACMS.
??Similar to previous strikes, an American RQ-4B drone freely patrolled the airspace south of Crimea, overseeing the operation.
However, even in its absence, the adversary obtained the necessary information. Clear footage of the attacks is available on the Internet, thanks to the actions of pro-Ukrainian residents of the city, as well as some minors.
The question remains as to why residents of Russian Crimea are seemingly untroubled by the repercussions of such actions. The lack of concrete punitive measures hampers the apprehension and prosecution of such individuals, thereby endangering our military personnel.
??Meanwhile, Ukrainian forces are actively preparing for larger-scale assaults on the peninsula. A few days ago, there was an unsuccessful attempt to target the control point in Berdiansk, followed by today's attack on the airfield.
The objective is clear. Disrupt the coordination of our units by neutralizing command posts and causing significant damage to air defense forces. Achieving these dual aims, particularly with the fleet already weakened, is crucial for the AFU before targeting the Crimean Bridge.

What is the purpose of children kidnapped by Russia being in Germany? Child Exploitation?

His credentials mean that Xi allowed his article to be published. That's not a good look for Russia, especially his concentration on Sino-Russia relations.
Vladimir Putin is trapped in an information cocoon
This is remarkable.... it is completely true, it is the "Dictator's Dilemma," anybody who delivers bad news falls out of a window... it happens to every despot with no checks in a system.
but Xi has done the same thing to himself by most accounts, surrounding himself only with sycophants (not even really "Yes Man" because they are not even asked anything to reply to...) and in a much, much shorter time frame.
So... many questions about this article...
IDK, I don't think you can maintain your power for as long as Putin or even Xi has without being able to get and respond to bad news. The chickens of just ignoring challenges and issues that pop up would come home to roost eventually. This is more of the Disney-fying or comic-booking of reality, where the villain has anyone who says his shoes have a scuff on them beheaded or something. That doesn't mean they never do that, I just don't think its as common as you're suggesting.

Yeah and kids the Russians kidnapped ended up in Germany? Some logistical questions to be answered.

It means that the families got the kids out of Russia, and that there needs to be a better way to track this when it happens.

That’s an expensive strike and that still doesn’t factor in if any aircraft were hit.

Kings and emperors didn't typically face a lot of internal criticism, did they? I also think the "bubble" gets stronger as time goes on.
The initial "winds of change" bring in a whole regime of new people, usually loyal to a cause and competent. Factions form, and then power struggles occur, with winners replacing losers with loyalists. Over time, one faction/leader emerges, and they're surrounded by loyalists.
I actually think that's more likely in Russia (Putin) than China (Xi) at this point, based on the behavior of the two countries.

Mike Johnson Defies GOP Critics, Setting Up Ukraine-Israel Aid Showdown (WSJ)
I'm sure Errerrerrwere will be back anytime now to say how Johnson would never let this happen
quote:
House Speaker Mike Johnson said Wednesday he would plunge ahead with a high-stakes vote to move long-stalled funding for Ukraine, Israel and other overseas allies, elbowing aside criticism from his conservative flank just as he faces the most significant challenge to his young leadership.
Johnson’s plan envisions four bills—one each for Israel, Ukraine and Taiwan and a fourth bill containing many Republican priorities, including a ban or forced sale of TikTok in the U.S. House Republican leaders posted three of the four bills on Wednesday afternoon, with a final vote expected Saturday evening.
The move sets up an unpredictable weekend showdown that could determine both the fate of the foreign aid package and Johnson’s political career. It came as conservatives were again demanding border provisions in exchange for their support, while Democrats, who had favored the bill the Senate passed earlier this year, kept their cards close while preparing a backup plan if needed to force through aid.
Johnson took the leap as his political powers—always limited because of his narrow majority in the chamber and reliance on Democrats to pass key legislation—were at a new low. On Tuesday, a second GOP lawmaker signed on to a motion to remove the Louisiana Republican from the speaker job, and some lawmakers said they believed his career in leadership could be effectively over, whether now or at the end of the term.
For the package to pass this weekend, Johnson will likely need significant Democratic votes, just as he did on a series of bills to avoid government shutdowns in recent months.
Republicans remained divided Wednesday. Johnson’s approach, unveiled earlier in the week, didn’t include any immigration policy provisions, angering many conservatives who have insisted on border-security measures. Johnson met with Republicans from all corners of his conference late into Tuesday night to craft a way forward on legislation, and talks continued into Wednesday.
In announcing he was moving ahead with the aid package, Johnson said the House would vote on a separate border security measure that contained portions of Republicans’ signature H.R. 2 bill, which passed the House last year. The outcome of that vote won’t have any effect on the foreign-aid plan, and critics said it didn’t address their concerns about the package.
Johnson has said for weeks he planned to lay out his long-stalled proposal on foreign aid, months after the Senate passed a $95 billion measure that wrapped together money for Ukraine, Israel, Taiwan and humanitarian efforts. Congressional leaders of both parties and President Biden had urged Johnson to take up the Senate bill, but he opted for a different approach to try to work around sharp disagreements in the GOP over further aid to Kyiv.
The House effort gained new urgency after Iran launched a wave of more than 300 drones and cruise and ballistic missiles toward Israel last weekend, while conditions in Ukraine have continued to deteriorate in the country’s third year of trying to repel a Russian invasion.
Democrats were working to tee up a discharge petition, which would put the Senate bill on the House floor without forcing Johnson to take the politically tenuous step of bringing it up himself. Still, the petition maneuver needs a majority of the chamber, rarely works and was last used in 2015.
Republicans who support sending aid to Ukraine were threatening to sign the Democrats’ petition, according to people familiar with the discussions, and Democratic leaders were encouraging members to reach out to GOP colleagues. Nearly all Democrats have signed the petition.
I'm sure Errerrerrwere will be back anytime now to say how Johnson would never let this happen
