If the Czechs are serious about being able to get their hands on 800,000 shells is true then that should be priority #1 for Europe even if the U.S. is currently on the sidelines. European countries were already behind in their own production of artillery shells than what they planned so this would seem to be a way of bailing them out as well as helping to give Ukraine a fighting chance against massed enemy attacks. The last thing I want to hear is that NATO without the U.S. can’t afford to pay up the price for these shells because everyone knows that’s complete bullshite. Artillery buys time and time is what Ukraine needs more than anything right now. When the 110th Mechanized’s artillery guns started to fall silent on the northern flank of Avdiivka for lack of shells is really when it all went to shite and the rout was on. If they had been able to keep up a reasonable rate of fire the Russians wouldn’t have been able to advance as fast as they were able to in the end and the retreat wouldn’t have been as much of a shitshow.

Time for Euro Leeches to pay. USA has carried the financial burden for NATO for decades. They are only paying incrementally more now because of Russia attacking Ukraine. They failed from 2014 to 2022 to meet their OBLIGATIONS, except for a few countries. They can pay for their own defense now.

Zelenskyy literally let a US citizen be killed after we gave him over $100 billion in cash.

Per US Congress:

How much has the US agreed to spend on Ukraine? So far, Congress has approved about $113 billion in aid to Ukraine, according to calculations by the US State Department Office of Inspector General and the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget.

And your percentage of gdp is nonsense, tell ukraine we gave 113 billion which is far greater than Latvias percentage of gdp in real dollars/cold hard cash. Ya cant load a gun with gdp percentages.

That’s the real problem with this country way too much stupidity and pussification. We need a cleansing

A bill can be brought to the House floor by using a discharge petition. It only requires a majority of the House to sign it. I believe that will happen. B there's no way for speaker Johnson to block it ... at least, that I know of.

So how does this work. The house Dems plus some number of house republicans, maybe just a few retiring ones, bring the senate bill to a vote through a discharge petition?

Or does the house bring its own bill through a discharge petition?

The discharge petition is a public petition to bring a bill to the House floor. In this case, it would likely be started by Hakeem Jeffries, the Minority Leader. Most Democrats would sign, but the Israel aid in the bill means that most of The Squad will not -- AOC has already said that she will not sign.

So, about 10 Republican members would have to sign. The last time the House voted on Ukraine aid, there were over 70 GOP votes in favor, so I can't imagine that 10 will be all that difficult.

Normally, discharge petitions are rare, because members of a party don't normally want to embarrass their party leaders. They normally would fear losing committee assignments or projects for their districts. But this is not a normal Congress, and the Speaker is relatively powerless to do those things.

Besides the many GOP hawks who support Ukraine, you have to keep in mind that, despite the fact that Congress is more gerrymandered than ever, there are still something like 20-40 Republicans in swing districts, and support for Ukraine is overwhelmingly popular, as we saw with the recent Pew poll. A failure to support Ukraine would be a significant campaign issue for their opponents.

That's why you should bet on the House passing the bill.

A Canadian couple moved to Russia to raise their eight kids in a superior moral environment. How do you think that it's going for them?

Sweden is announcing a new $900 million aid package today, including 35 CV-90 IFVs, 10 fast-attack boats, 20 smaller boats, some TOW missiles, ambulances, and a lot of 155mm shells.

quote:

The support package, which is the 15th in a row, will be presented at two press conferences on Tuesday. It is intended to be an important signal to Ukraine, Russia and the rest of the Western world about long-term Swedish support for Ukraine's defense struggle.

INTELLIGENCE UPDATE
UPDATE ON UKRAINE
20 February 2024

Within the past week Russian forces have taken control of Avdiivka as well as the coke plant situated to the north of the town, both of which have been heavily contested since October 2023 and have been on the front line since 2014.

Ukrainian forces have withdrawn to defensive positions west of Avdiivka.

It is likely that Russian forces lack the combat effectiveness to immediately exploit the capture of Avdiivka and will require a period of rest and refit. In coming weeks Russia will likely seek to gradually extend its territorial control beyond Avdiivka.

Again, you can disagree that the US is giving aid, but at least use facts. Latvia is at 1.2% of GDP and the US is at 0.32%

And you can't load it with "cold hard cash" either. So are you now agreeing that the US hasn't providing "over $100B in cash" to Ukraine?

I’ve been supporting a negotiated settlement here once it became obvious the Biden administration was afraid of victory.

Good point Drink, but I gotta disagree. We cannot negotiate with a psychopath such as Putin. As soon as we even use the N word with Putin, we’ve already lost. These types of individuals never uphold their end of any bargain and enter into ‘negotiation’ only to buy time to strengthen their position. They then continue right where they left off prior to the ‘agreement’. Don’t take my word for it, ask the people in the Baltic States, Finland, Poland and Romania. They have lived and suffered with the Russians in their back yards for over a century.

This war will end only when Putin and his supporters are dead or permanently removed from power. That will take a months-long Ukrainian cruise missile campaign next year hitting every military-related target in Russia. Not only every military base west of Vladivostok, but also every refinery, oil storage depot, airport, rail yard, port, bridge, and each and every manufacturing site that can support the Russian war effort. All flattened and flattened again. Only then will this war end – not with any negotiation but with an unconditional surrender. Boots on their throats for the next 40 years, until a couple of generations of Russian children have a Western outlook on living with their neighbors.

If you’re worried about nukes, don’t be. The Russians are bullies, used to their cowardly hybrid warfare. They know what will happen to them and all their overseas bank accounts if they so much as flip off a safety switch. If you think the Russians (and Chinese) were shocked at all their hypersonic missiles getting shot down, just wait to see what they think when they see what happens to their nukes – weapons that the Western air defense was designed to eliminate.

But you’ll have to look fast, they won’t be in a position to think very long.
