Report: RJ Luis Jr.'s Lawyers Ask Judge To Block SEC From Punishing LSU

Brian Fluharty-Imagn Images
Attorneys representing RJ Luis Jr. have asked a Louisiana judge to prevent the SEC from punishing LSU if the Tigers add the former St. John's star to their roster, according to ESPN.
The request was filed Tuesday in East Baton Rouge Parish, where Judge Ronald Johnson previously issued a preliminary injunction against the NCAA, which has maintained that Luis is ineligible to play college basketball.
Despite that ruling, LSU has not added Luis to its roster because of the SEC's rules regarding athletes with professional experience.
Luis, the 2025 Big East Player of the Year, went undrafted in the 2025 NBA Draft before briefly signing contracts with the Utah Jazz and Boston Celtics. However, he never appeared in an NBA game.
His attorneys are now asking the court to block the SEC from imposing penalties on LSU and prevent the university from following conference directives that would keep Luis from playing.
The situation mirrors LSU football's earlier legal battle involving former NFL players Dae'Quan Wright and Zxavian Harris, who were also kept off the Tigers' roster despite a court injunction.
Under the SEC's updated enforcement rules, schools that violate the conference's professional eligibility restrictions could face significant fines, coaching suspensions, and other penalties.
Will Wade and the Tigers will open up the 2026-2027 season on Tuesday, November 3, against LSU New Orleans (UNO) at the PMAC. Tip-off is at 7 pm CT on the SEC Network+.
