Key Takeaways:

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Ukrainian Commander-in-Chief General Valerii Zaluzhnyi signaled intent to increase Ukrainian defenses and fortifications around the Ukrainian theater, but notably did not include Zaporizhia Oblast in discussions of ongoing and future defensive measures.

Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu continues to falsely characterize Russian offensive efforts in Ukraine as part of an “active defense” in an effort to temper expectations about the Russian military’s ability to achieve operationally significant objectives.

Ukrainian intelligence reportedly damaged another train along a section of the Baikal-Amur Railway on December 1 in an apparent effort to degrade Russian logistics in the Russian Far East.

Russian President Vladimir Putin officially changed the composition of the Russian Presidential Council for Civil Society and Human Rights (HRC) on December 1, removing several members and appointing a prominent anti-opposition media figure.

Chechen Republic Head Ramzan Kadyrov claimed that a second group of Palestinian refugees from the Gaza Strip arrived in Chechnya on December 1, possibly partially funded by his daughter’s ”Children of Chechnya - Children of Palestine” organization.

Russian milbloggers claimed that the Russian Ministry of Defense (MoD)’s disproportionate allocation of drones among frontline units and poorly-executed grassroots drone production campaigns are impacting frontline unit effectiveness.

Russian sources complained that Russian soldiers' continued use of personal electronics and messaging apps in frontline areas is jeopardizing Russian operational security (OPSEC).

Russian forces continued offensive operations along the Kupyansk-Svatove-Kreminna line, near Bakhmut, near Avdiivka, west and southwest of Donetsk City, and in western Zaporizhia Oblast and advanced in some areas.

Russian Security Council Deputy Chairperson Dmitry Medvedev claimed on December 1 that the Russian military has recruited over 452,000 personnel between January 1 and December 1, 2023.

Russian occupation officials continue to set conditions for the deportation of Ukrainians to Russia under various vacation schemes.

Putin signs decree boosting troop numbers by 15% as war with Ukraine takes toll

quote:

Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed a decree allowing the army to boost its troop numbers by 15 per cent. Putin's signing of the decree comes in the backdrop of the war with Ukraine, which has continued for more than 21 months now, causing a significant shortage in the army ranks.

According to estimates, the move is expected to increase the number of serving army soldiers by at least 170,000, which is being touted as an "adequate" response to the "aggressive activity of the NATO bloc".

"The increase in the full-time strength of the army is due to growing threats to our country linked with the special military operation and the continuing expansion of NATO," the army said

While the numbers are being boosted, the army made it clear that it was not planning to make changes to conscription or another mobilisation drive. Last year, the conscription drive led to an exodus of men out of Russia.

Both sides are running low on personnel as the war takes its toll. The replenishment in the ranks is expected to provide the booster shot to the Russian side whose front lines have barely moved in recent months.

Meanwhile, Ukraine has struggled to retake territory from Russia, despite launching a much-publicised counter-offensive in June, after stocking on Western weapons.

In recent days, Moscow has tried to intensify the assaults by using record number of drones, according to Kyiv. The Ukrainian Air Force claimed it had intercepted 71 Iranian-made drones across six regions of the country, including capital Kyiv, earlier this week.

The Air Force said: "Anti-aircraft missile troops, tactical aviation, mobile fire groups, and electronic warfare units were involved in repelling the air attack." As per the Air Force, a Kh-59 guided missile was also destroyed in the Dnipropetrovsk region.

The increase in intensity comes after the weather improved, following powerful storms across southern Ukraine and Russia.

We are about to see the biggest arms production race since the start of the Cold War. Israel is doing their thing but they still need to borrow munitions from us and we started a proxy war with Russia so we can’t lose that war for optics alone. The world would greatly change with Russia and China being more and more aggressive. So now we are in it for the duration or until there are peace talks. I’m an admitted Ukraine supporter and I have a real respect for them as a nation much smaller than Russia withstood the superpower’s initial huge attack and has since been a complete slaughter. That being said, it is time to put up or shutup. Ukraine needs to be given what they truly need to push back an army the size of Putin’s. One thing this war has truly shown are that Ukrainian soldiers are night and day a better quality of military. This is a big reason for their ability to withstand being outnumbered. We either have to push Ukraine to the negotiating table or the U.S. and the rest of NATO has to supply all that is possible.

It goes beyond Ukraine. We can’t look weak on the world stage and pull out in terrible fashion like we did Afghanistan and Vietnam. Ukraine is fighting with our weapons which wouldn’t boast well if they were constantly being defeated. Putin could have never imagined his little 3 day military operation would be headed into year 2.

How do you know Ukrainians and Russians? Does one side know you're friends with the other? Do your Russian friends know you served in Ukraine? If so, what do they think about it? I know you're an MD and I infer you're from somewhere in Louisiana. How did you get involved in all this?

1. I have Ukrainian friends because my roommate in medical school was from Ukraine. I went to Ukraine with him on during summer break our first year of medical school. He had served in the Ukrainian army before going to military school so naturally a lot of the people I met through him were military or ex military who have been called back up. His brothers are also in the Ukrainian military. One is in intelligence and used to be one of the intelligence people who countered Russian disinformation online but then he got promoted.

2. I have friends in Russia because I went on mission trips and vacationed there when I was in college. I kept in touch with the people I met there using social media. They know that I am pro-Ukraine but they are like the majority of Russians who don’t support the war or are apathetic in regards to the war. However they realize nothing they do can change what the Kremlin does.

3. I didn’t serve in Ukraine. In July and August of 2022, I went and helped out at the hospital that my former roommate’s father and sister work at in Kharkiv. It was a long train ride from the Polish border to Kharkiv and I met some members of the Ukrainian Air Force at the bar on the train. On the way home, I took a detour and went to visit my old roommate while his unit was rotating back from the frontlines. I went back to Kharkiv and helped out at the hospital again this past spring.

The M1A1s, Bradley’s, M113, HIMARS, etc were pulled out of storage. The Obama administration decided to dispose of all the cluster munitions in the US inventory. They were literally sitting in warehouses waiting to be disposed of before being sent to Ukraine. The FrankenSam program is taking Sea Sparrow and Sidewinder missiles that have been pulled from service and are being recoded to be fired from Ukraine’s existing Buk missile launchers and radars. The ATCAMS that were recently sent to Ukraine are block1 versions which were manufactured in the 90s and put into storage in the 2010s. So yes the stuff we are sending to Ukraine was sitting and rusting in warehouses here in the USA and Europe.

I don't think Health and Human Services has a lot of bearing on how strong the US is on the world stage.

I think it has more to do with

Damn, that's a nice picture. I think the captain is letting his girlfriend drive the second boat on the right, though.

British Defence Intelligence
INTELLIGENCE UPDATE
UPDATE ON UKRAINE 02 December 2023

The Russian authorities are likely attempting to quash public dissent by wives of deployed Russian soldiers, including by attempting to pay them off and discrediting them online. This follows small scale protests in Moscow in November 2023.

Research by independent Russia media outlets and comments by protesting wives themselves suggest that, in recent weeks, the authorities have likely offered increased cash payments to families in return for them refraining from protest.

On 27 November 2023, one prominent online group for soldiers' wives published a manifesto against 'indefinite mobilisation'. Around 30 November 2023, the group was pinned with a 'fake' warning label - likely at the instigation of pro-Kremlin actors. The authorities are likely particularly sensitive to any protests related to those citizens mobilised in September 2022, who have now been at the front line for over a year.
