Most of these former prisoners die in "meat assaults" in places like Avdiivka, but the few who survive and make it back to Russia are going to be problems for years.

Just how screwed up is Russia if they are so desperate for fighters that they need to do this?

A cannibal serial killer who is said to have murdered 13 people and filled his refrigerator with human flesh has been pardoned by Vladimir Putin and sent to fight in Ukraine. The decision has caused shock on Russian social media networks
quote:

This is not the first time that notorious murderers and even cannibals have been pardoned to fight in the war. Only this week, it became known that Putin had pardoned a Satanist cannibal, Nikolai Ogolobyak, who had killed and eaten four teenagers.

I would have thought we would have news by now if the Ukrainians sending more men and equipment across the river and tried to expand their bridgehead. Unfortunately I believe this operation trying to cross the river is going to factor in greatly of how this war will turn out. With Russia not having the number of troops they want in the area the Ukrainians need to shoot their shot. The little probing attacks are good but they need some good press for the west to see. This is the area they have the best chance to advance. They can’t wait forever. Not trying to be negative I’m just looking at the reality of the situation.

So the EU is buying off Orban to get the $50b Ukraine funding? That’s not ideal.

It's not but it is OBVIOUS that Putin has something on Orban, money in a secret account or photos of him with a small boy, and via him, Tucker the Stupid Phucker.

UPDATE ON UKRAINE 24 November 2023

Russian forces in Ukraine continue to suffer mass casualties from Ukrainian long-range precision strikes well behind the front line. On 10 November 2023, likely over 70 Russian troops were killed in a strike on a convoy of trucks 23km behind the front line in the village of Hladkivka, Kherson Oblast.

Subsequently, on 19 November 2023, a strike on Russian troops attending an award ceremony or concert in Kumachove, 60km inside Russian-controlled territory, likely caused tens of casualties. Ukraine has also suffered similar incidents: a Russian ballistic missile killed 19 members of Ukraine's 128th Separate Mountain Assault Brigade at a medal ceremony on 3 November 2023.

Deployed soldiers are typically well aware of the ranges of their adversary's weapons systems. However, faced with the reality of very long combat deployments, commanders face an acute dilemma. They must balance the best practice of keeping the troops dispersed, and less vulnerable to strikes, and the day-to-day requirement to gather units together to conduct administration and to maintain morale.

Huge. I wonder what Ukraine does with this system. My guess is that it goes to Odessa to protect against Russian missile attacks in the south.

To this point, Ukraine has been unable to intercept Russian Onyx missiles fired from Crimea.

Rybar claims Russian success near Krynky:

quote:

Last night the 810th Marine Brigade and 144th Motorized Rifle Brigade troops carried out a surprise counterattack on the Ukrainian forces near Krynky.

The AFU was knocked out of the wooded area, and the Ukrainian Navy Marine assault squads began to flee their positions and suffered losses.

At the moment there is no enemy left in the area, and all the AFU units are concentrated in private residential areas near the bank of the Dnipro River.

Key Takeaways:

Ukrainian officials reported that Russian forces began a renewed offensive effort towards Avdiivka on November 22, although likely with weaker mechanized capabilities than in the previous offensive waves that occurred in October.

High-ranking Russian officials may be engaged in a wider scheme of forcibly adopting deported Ukrainian children.

Ukraine’s Western allies declared their commitment to further develop Ukrainian air defense capabilities during the 17th Ramstein Group virtual meeting on November 22.

Russian President Vladimir Putin attended the Collective Security Treaty Organization’s (CSTO) Collective Security Council session in Minsk, Belarus on November 23 against the background of Armenia’s continued absence from recent CSTO events and exercises.

Chinese businesses, including a prominent state-owned Chinese construction firm, are reportedly working with Russian businessmen to plan the construction of an underwater tunnel that would connect Russia with occupied Crimea.

European states are responding to Russia's continued orchestration of an artificially created migrant crisis on its northwestern borders.

The Russian Strelkov (Igor Girkin) Movement (RDS) called prior Russian regional elections and the upcoming Russian presidential election illegitimate, likely in an effort to establish Girkin’s inevitable presidential election loss as a long-standing grievance.

Russian law enforcement reportedly detained about 700 migrants at a warehouse in Moscow Oblast and issued some military summonses, likely as part of an ongoing effort to coerce migrants into Russian military service.

The Kremlin is reportedly renewing attempts to control all video surveillance systems in Russia, likely as part of ongoing efforts to intensify its tools of digital authoritarianism to increase domestic repressions.

Russian forces conducted ground attacks along the Svatove-Kreminna line, near Bakhmut, near Avdiivka, west and southwest of Donetsk City, in the Donetsk-Zaporizhia Oblast border area, and in western Zaporizhia Oblast and marginally advanced in some areas.

The Russian aviation industry is likely under significant constraints due to international sanctions and demands from the Russian defense industrial base (DIB).

The Russian occupation authorities continue efforts to indoctrinate Ukrainian children in occupied Ukraine into Russian national and cultural identities.

Well that is ironic. Back in the 2000s when Ukraine and Russia were on good terms Ukraine suggested building a tunnel between Crimea and Russia. Russia declined because a tunnel was not as glorious as a bridge. Now Russia is admitting that their bridge was a bad idea.

I’m sure it’s been discussed here already but I heard something interesting that Putin is keeping the war largely away from the people of Moscow / St Petersburg / the west in general by drawing many of the soldiers sent to Ukraine from far off Siberian parts. That way the population of the larger and more important cities don’t see much in the way of casualties and since most Russians get their news from TV the Russian propaganda machine simply takes care of the rest.

This of course decimates some of the small towns in the east however but I doubt that’s much of a concern.

UPDATE ON UKRAINE 25 November 2023

Russia's Black Sea Fleet's (BSF) ability to use its Novorossiysk base to reload vessels with cruise missiles is likely to become a significant factor in the fleet's operational effectiveness.

Traditionally, BSF has reloaded cruise missiles at Sevastopol in Crimea. With that facility increasingly held at risk by Ukrainian long range strikes, Russia will highly likely see Novorossiysk as the best alternative site. However, relocating and reloading the missiles would require new delivery, storage, handling and loading processes.

On 13 November 2023, the Ukrainian military claimed that Russia has paused firing maritime cruise missiles because of 'logistical problems' at Novorossiysk. Russia will likely seek to expedite overcoming such issues in time for maritime cruise missiles to be included in any winter campaign of strikes against Ukraine.

Russia launches record 75 attack drones at Ukraine, all but one downed
Roman Petrenko — Saturday, 25 November 2023, 11:06

The Russians launched a record number of attack UAVs at Ukraine on the night of 24-25 November. There were 75 Shahed kamikaze drones, 74 of which were shot down.

Source: Mykola Oleshchuk, Commander of Ukraine’s Air Force

Details: Oleshchuk said that 71 of the 75 Shahed drones had been shot down.

Updated: The Ukrainian Air Force confirmed at 11:00 that the Russians had indeed launched 75 Shaheds, with 74 of them shot down.

Quote from Oleshchuk: "The main target of the attack was Kyiv!

I would like to especially mention the combat work of the mobile fire groups of the Air Force and the Defence Forces of Ukraine.

They [the mobile firing groups] destroyed almost 40% of the targets!"

Not only that but those towns are very poor with very little opportunity. The amount of money they’re being offered is significant for their family relative to those in bigger cities, so there’s a bit of “selection bias” going on as well

I can't seem to find it but I posted a link to a study that looked at the average Russian Volunteer. That was gernally the case, they were poor and knew someone else who had served

Key Takeaways:

Russian forces launched the largest drone strike against Ukraine since the start of the full-scale invasion overnight on November 24 to 25 using a new modification of the Iranian Shahed 131/136 drones.

Ukrainian and Russian forces continue to grapple with the challenges electronic warfare (EW) systems pose on the front.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced on November 25 that Ukraine’s Western partners agreed to transfer warships to Ukraine to protect Ukraine’s grain corridor in the Black Sea.

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan stated that Russia has not fulfilled arms export deals to Armenia and offered an alternative arrangement that would allow Russia to keep the weapons against the backdrop of recent deteriorating Russian-Armenian relations.

Infighting among Russian ultranationalist milbloggers, likely exacerbated by ethnic tensions, has compelled a prominent milblogger to close his Telegram channel.

Other milbloggers attributed increased infighting among ultranationalist voices about the war in Ukraine to Russian politics and the coming 2024 Russian presidential elections.

Russian forces conducted offensive operations along the Kupyansk-Svatove-Kreminna line, near Bakhmut, near Avdiivka, west and southwest of Donetsk City, in the Donetsk-Zaporizhia Oblast border area, and in western Zaporizhia Oblast on November 25 and advanced in some areas.

Russian military commanders are reportedly ignoring frontline units’ requests for drones.

Ukraine’s Ministry of Reintegration reported on November 24 that over 13,500 Ukrainians returned to Ukraine from Russia via a humanitarian corridor in Sumy Oblast since its establishment in July 2023.
