INTELLIGENCE UPDATE
UPDATE ON UKRAINE 21 November 2023

Between 18-19 November 2023 Russia launched around 50 Iranian-designed Shahed one way-attack uncrewed aerial vehicles, primarily towards Kyiv. These were launched in waves on two axes - from the Kursk to the east, and from Krasnodar to the south-east.

One of Russia's objectives was likely to degrade Ukraine's air defences, to shape the battlespace ahead of any concerted winter campaign of strikes against Ukraine's energy infrastructure.

Russia has now refrained from launching its premier air launched cruise missiles from its heavy bomber fleet for nearly two months, likely allowing it to build up a substantial stock of these weapons. Russia is highly likely to use these missiles if it repeats last year's effort to destroy Ukraine's critical national infrastructure.

Germany pledges another aid package worth more than 1.3 billion euros to #Ukraine! I am still waiting for a detailed summary, but this is already known

— 4 IRIS-T SLM air defence systems
— 20,000 shells 155mm artillery ammunition
— 60 high-quality surveillance drones
— More than 24 drone detection systems

Ukrainian air defense is going to be much better prepared this winter to shoot down Russian missile attacks.

EDIT: Pistorius is in Kyiv today.

The Ukrainians did exactly what I said they shouldn’t and sent Humvees and MRAPS across to the east bank of the river instead of older Soviet armored vehicles that are tracked instead of wheeled and now there are several pictures of a big cluster frick of U.S. wheeled vehicles buried to their axels in mud. If they are unable to get them out then Russia will more than likely destroy them where they sit with artillery and mortar fire or try to capture them whole. Hopefully the Ukrainians have enough awareness to destroy those vehicles in the event they are pushed back.

Ukrainian pilots are already flying F-16s in Denmark

Some Ukrainian pilots are already undergoing flight training on F-16 fighter jets in Denmark.

Yurii Ihnat, Spokesman for the Ukrainian Air Force, reported on this.

These flights are conducted with instructors and are carried out on two-seater aircraft.

According to Ihnat, prior to getting into the F-16 cockpit, Ukrainian pilots flew light-engine aircraft, which helped pilots transition to a new type of fighter jet easier.

“Now, there are already flights with an instructor. Every day, the number of Ukrainian pilots who are trained and perform the tasks set by the instructor may increase,” Ihnat reported.

The next stage of Ukrainian training will include the transition to independent flights.

“And then, accordingly, flights for combat use to learn to fight on this aircraft,” Ihnat explained.

Damnit General, why didn't you tell someone?

Dont assume the people actually in Ukraine know what they are doing ever again!

Positive step but still a long, long way to go before they are ready to fly the A model
(single seat) over hostile airspace. I would assume Ukraine ends up leaving the few F-16B models (2 seater) in Denmark or Romania until after the war so that new pilots can learn on them.

Ukraine has been using it old Soviet PTS-2 amphibious transporters to get vehicles across the Dnipro. These transporters can only carry 12 tons, which is less than the tracked vehicles you suggest.

Ukraine needs to push the Russian back and secure a larger perimeter before they can deploy a pontoon ferry to get heavier vehicles across.

Humvees and MRAPs are not particularly valuable vehicles. It's no disaster if Ukraine loses them.

It is if it wastes time. The longer Ukraine takes to move forward, the more entrenched the Russians get.

I think there's a real chance Russia runs out of motivated reserves in the south, but not at the current pace.

It's a tough spot to be in, because if Ukraine gets too aggressive they'll take unacceptable losses, but if they're not aggressive Russia will entrench themselves.

It has got to be miserable out in the fields of mud, cold and wet for both sides.

Premiering on Frontline tonight.

Ukrainian journalist Mstyslav Chernov and his colleagues risk their lives to document Russia's siege of Mariupol in this FRONTLINE/AP documentary.

Remember that fuel, ammo and other supplies are needed to cross the river, LOTS of it, should more and tracked vehicles cross.

It’s obvious our military is phasing the tank out in areas, namely the Marines. I don’t see production ever coming close to what we did in the 1980’s and 90’s. If we spend to make new tech it’s going to aircraft, UAVs and ships to modernize the Navy. Honestly maxing out production of Javelins and Stingers would be more helpful. Beyween drones, artillery and anti-tank minefields miles thick I just don’t see the sense in it when assists can be used to better effect. By all means if we have M1A1s that can be brought back into service to give to Ukraine do it, same with the Bradley, but I doubt we see them with more orders for new equipment.

My point was that we should be using American aid money to Ukraine on American equipment first. Instead we are sending money to Ukraine for them to turn around and buy 400 newest version of the Leopard2. Yes the factory is supposed to be in western Ukraine and employ Ukrainians, but the components will be made all over Europe but mostly in Germany. So Germany and Europe get the economic benefit from US aid. It would make a lot more sense for the USA to purchase M1A2s and add a 3rd shift to the Lima tank factory so the USA could get the economic benefit from the aid.

Don't even get me started on the stupidity of the USA to deny Ukraine all of Poland's Migs because we did not want to piss Russia off in March of 2022 or the fact that we waited 16+ months to decide to supply Ukraine with F16s despite the fact that by April 2022 it was obvious that Russia was not going to walk over Ukraine and Ukraine might have a shot at winning if aid was provided in a timely manner.

Then try listening to or reading the reports from the Russian military bloggers on Telegram. They at least have a realism to their bias. You can get some good info out of their reports and compare it with the Ukrainian reports. Combine the two and have a decent idea about what is going on. Reading Sputnik or RT or TASS etc is another story all together. The only thing accurate they publish is the Moscow weather forecast.

Take a look at the 2 week forecast for Kherson. Russia cannot entrench in that mud and mines just sink in the mud.

The fuel is not that hard. Ukraine can simply put a pipe across the river underwater. I agree that the ammo and supplies are a challenge. For now, they have to keep using boats.

Just looking at the pictures made me cold and I am sitting in a nice warm box stand. Also don't forget the rats. The rats have overrun the trenches on both sides. Ukraine has been keeping cats in its trenches to deal with the rats but they cannot keep up. I think it safe to say that living in the trenches on either sucks arse right about now.
