100,000 plus dead and counting for absolutely nothing. Awesome deal!

This stupid war hasn't changed a single thing geopolitically. Just a lot of dead people and orphans and widows.

Mass madness.

What is this about with Biden activating pieces of our reserves?

https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/presidential-actions/2023/07/13/ordering-the-selected-reserve-and-certain-members-of-the-individual-ready-reserve-of-the-armed-forces-to-active-duty/

Why activate these troops?

And this
https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/presidential-actions/2023/07/13/message-to-the-congress-on-ordering-the-selected-reserve-and-certain-members-of-the-individual-ready-reserve-of-the-armed-forces-to-active-duty/
quote:

In accordance with section 12304(f) of title 10, United States Code, I am providing notice that I have authorized the Secretary of Defense and the Secretary of Homeland Security with respect to the Coast Guard when it is not operating as a service in the Department of the Navy, to order to active duty members and units of the Selected Reserve and appropriately designated Individual Ready Reserve members, without the consent of the member concerned, pursuant to 12304(a) of title 10, United States Code. Reserve mobilizations under this authorization are not to exceed 3,000 total members at any one time, of whom not more than 450 may be members of the Individual Ready Reserve. These Reserve Component forces are to augment the active forces for Operation Atlantic Resolve to enhance the United States’ ability to sustain its heightened level of presence and operations in support of United States European Command.

A copy of the Executive Order I have issued is enclosed.

I agree with you that Putin was dumb to order the invasion last year. What a waste of lives. And more lives will also be lost -- though Russia could save those lives simply by deciding to leave Ukraine.

That’s what I’ve seen suggested but don’t know if true.

Seems odd though. Anecdotally, I know of a few recently retired servicemen who all knew of others retiring/leaving service for the same reason. Combined with known recruitment shortfalls maybe there’s truth to it, maybe not. I don’t have a way to understand the scale of it.

Dark Brandon is incredible. I can’t even imagine his power if he’s able to force Putin to invade Ukraine.

Does no one else find it concerning that so much top of the line Western equipment is barely making a difference in the war?

It certainly isn't instilling confidence.

It will be interesting to hear their response to getting asked "Why did you activate these reserves?" If anyone will ask it.

I think that when it's announced what they are calling up, will give a good idea as to why they are calling them up.

ETA: I'm not aware of any pending massive shipments of war materials to Ukraine, enough so that it would require activating reserves to support.

What is our ROI on the $ trillion that we handed to them of taxpayer money?

It'd help to start getting the numbers right.

There hasn't been a transfer of a trillion dollars of goods or services or equipment. Through the end of May, its been about 77B in completed transactions, with a budgeted amount of somewhere in the neighborhood of 115B.

That said, its been a *fantastic* return on investment. Hell, the defense infrastructure rebuilding being done in Europe alone more than justifies the outlay, given how hard we have struggled to get NATO partners to live up to their commitments under the Trump administration-- this is a big win for a key element of Trump's NATO policy, even.

Oh, and then there's the net windfall of the denudding of the Russian military's offensive capability for conservatively 10 years, removing one of the two aspiring competitors to American military power. There's the follow on live action testing grounds for experimental tech, the complete rethinking of other enemies that have leaned on Russian arms purchases as the bulwark of their strategic planning for the last 20 years- the windfall is damned near invaluable.

It’s probably nothing. Just a blanket authorization for EUCOM to staff itself with up to 3K reservist funded under the Atlantic Resolve operation. I’d bet it’s mostly staff officers, aviation squadrons and possibly some reservist/national guard units that specialize in conducting training for foreign militaries.

Wait, are we paying for them to rebuild their defense infrastructure capacity?

Trump was right about NATO. But Europe is full of whiny children who would rather throw a tantrum than give into Trump.

I have zero faith that Europe will continue to invest in defense after the war. They have zero incentive to.

Meh, outside of its nukes Russia is a regional threat, and not even a very competent one because they can’t even take over Ukraine.

The money would’ve had been better spent building more ships and navy bases in the Pacific to counter the real threat.

Calling up SelRes and IRR used to be extremely rare. Over the last 20 years or so it has become more common. Often it is a result of needing extra bodies in a certain MOS that is limited in the active component. The ones they are activating don't indicate to me any overt change in posture. If they start activating combat arms reserve units that will definitely move the needle.

Just wanting to confirm. We are all okay with sending money to a country that housed 20+ biolabs that researched viral weaponry and not okay when a country claims violation of the Biological Weapons Treaty Act of 1975, right?

History has been rewritten since the dawn of man. We live in a corrupt world, where powers and entities, not of flesh and blood, lobby for their powers from manipulated legislators. This is no longer a republic.
