Need to be prepared for fall out in Belarus if any real instability comes to Russia from all this.
So goes Russia so goes lukashenko.
How do y'all know this stuff? I've never even heard of lukashenko, much less know the situation around ihim.

Agreed. I wonder how they would handle the coaling and watering of those locos along the line. Not saying it couldn't be done it would just be interesting to see the solutions. Tanker fire trucks would be good for water I suppose.
Fire trucks could work. It also wouldn’t be all that hard to throw up some water towers along the lines. The Ukies have proved that they are resourceful little buggers when they need to be. Ukraine also has plenty of farmers who have nurse trailers which could be borrowed to transport water. If they did get that desperate for locomotives then getting water and coal to refueling spots would be the least of their worries. I highly doubt it ever happens, but it would be cool to see some of those monsters brought back to life. I was obsessed with steam engines as a kid and I would love to see those 10 wheelers up and running again.

He has been the "president" of Belarus for almost 30 years and despite being a country with a small geopolitical footprint he always seems to do something to warrant his name being mentioned in the world press. Early on in his presidency, he said Hitler was the role model for his office. That being said he is easy to lose in a world full of despotic rulers.

Wether or not Ukraine will be able to go on the offensive will depend of if they can get enough artillery back on the line from repair facilities and if the 100,000 155 mm artillery shells from South Korea arrive in time. They have plenty of soldiers and while they would love more tanks they have enough for an offensive. It’s heavy artillery and the ammunition for it that is the deciding factor.

I spent a lot of my childhood abroad where the only thing in English on TV was CNN world news. It kind of triggered a life long love of geography and global affairs. I also read the Economist on the pot pretty regularly. So that and my wife and kids have EU passports so I try to stay somewhat abreast of what my future overlords may be up to.

World affairs do impact business here in the USA, at least in process equipment for manufacturing. I have to pay attention or lose money.

Dammit just made a long post and got an error message and the post was gone.
So this post will be less dense.
Engels AFB in Russia has been hit. It is important because it is the home of Tu-160 & Tu-95MS bombers in the 121st & 184th Heavy Bomber Aviation Regiment. These are likely used in the attacks on Ukraine's infrastructure. The base is 600+km from any Ukrainian controlled territory. Is this a test of their new home grown drones?
Twitter video with likely the sound of the drone/cruise missile/ or ?, then light and sound of explosion
Twitter another view of the explosion
Twitter another explosion inside Russia after the Engels strike
Tons of tweets with different info about the base, geolocation of the video cameras, and information about the units and aircraft housed at the base. Search: Engels Russia

The way those bombers were lined up together coupled with the severity of that explosion it would seem like more than just 2 bombers were affected. Especially, since they were loaded with missiles.

Looks like Russia has launched another massive missile barrage at Ukraine within the last hour

British Defence Intelligence
UPDATE ON UKRAINE 5 Decembver 2022
INTELLIGENCE UPDATE
In recent months, the number of sorties conducted by Russian tactical combat aircraft over Ukraine has reduced significantly. Russian aircraft now probably conducts tens of missions per day, compared to a high of up to 300 per day in March 2022.
Russia has now lost over 60 fixed-wing aircraft in the conflict, likely including an additional Su-24M FENCER fighter-bomber and a Su-25 FROGFOOT ground attack aircraft last week.
The decrease in sorties is likely a result of continued high threat from Ukrainian air defences, limitations on the flying hours available to Russian aircraft, and worsening weather. With Russia's ground attack tactics largely reliant on visual identification and unguided munitions, the Russian air force will likely continue a low rate of ground attack operations through the poor winter weather.

It definitely looks like Ukraine knew that this particular wave of strikes was coming, and sent drones to attack two airbase when they knew that planes would be lined up in a row.
The fact that Ukraine's new drones can strike some 200 miles or so into Russia is a big deal.

And the fact that Ukraine is presently using its drones on military targets is more evidence of the difference between Russia and Ukraine. Russia would have hit an apartment complex.

Ukraine uses its drones to attack air bases where Russia was preparing to launch a missile swarm attack on Ukraine and reduces the size of the attack by over 75%. Meanwhile Russia uses its remaining missiles to target houses not critical infrastructure or military targets but houses.
This meme never ceases to apply to the war.

Yes, this is a big deal. It seems the Ukrainians now have their long-range missile.
Engels 2 is the main Russian strategic bomber base, home to divisions of Tu-95's and Tu-160's. There are only three bases in Russia that operate Tu-95's and Engels 2 is the only base in Russia that has the Tu-160's.
The base is 14km from Saratov, which, according to this map is in excess of 600km from the Ukrainian border.
My oh my. The rules have just been changed.
Edited to add that Obtuse1 had posted most of this information previously:

That might put greater Moscow in range, no?
And while an attack on Moscow is likely not in the cards, b/c of thee threat of a disproportionate response, attacks on power plant infrastructure in the area might be considered.

The drone supposedly has a range of 1000 KM. Lots of military targets to choose from if they can ramp up production.

Russia had 55 of these in service in 2020...sounds like they are down a few today.
Russia has 63 of these in service
Russia had 17 of these in operation in 2018
